  • Description:
    Identify issues of economic, political, and social importance to education and coordinate the work of the many agencies that support education. 8 year term limit.

    Maximum Number of Members: 34

    Meeting Time: Meets as required.

    Membership Requirements:
    Thirty-four members: Five members appointed by the Chairman, Pima County Board of Supervisors; five members appointed by the Mayor and Council; three members appointed by the Arizona Education Association; one member appointed by the Arizona School Administrators Association; one member appointed by the Greater Tucson School University Partnership; one member appointed by the Arizona School Boards Association; one member appointed by the President of the University of Arizona; one member appointed by the President of Pima Community College; one member appointed by the Metropolitan Tucson Chamber of Commerce; two members appointed by the Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities; one member appointed by the Tucson Urban League; one member appointed by the Hispanic Community Forum; one member appointed by an organization designated by the Commission shall be a representative of the Native American community; one member appointed by an organization designated by the Commission to represent the Asian American community; four members appointed by the Commission: one to represent the disabled community, one teacher or administrator from a regionally accredited private institution, and two at - large decided by the Commission; one member appointed by the various Tucson education enrichment foundations; two members shall be appointed by the Youth Advisory Council; and two members - the Pima County Superintendent of Schools and the Executive Director of the Commission, will serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of the Commission.

    Members should be residents of Pima County and should possess knowledge of issues and concerns related to education. Representation on this Commission shall, in every way possible, represent different segments of the community, including age, gender and ethnic groups.

    The terms of the members of the Commission appointed by the Chairman of the Pima County Board of Supervisors shall expire with the Chairman's term of office. The terms of the members of the Commission appointed by the Mayor and Council shall be four years, except for the initial terms, which shall be staggered as follows: by such means as the Executive Committee shall determine, one-third of such Commissioners shall serve two years, one-third shall serve three years, and one-third shall serve for four years.

    Commission members may be reappointed, subject to an eight year continuous service limitation.

    Per Reso. 16446, of the 5 members appointed by the Mayor and Council of the City of Tucson: 1 appointee shall be a parent, 1 appointee shall be a member of the Tucson City Council, 1 appointee shall be affiliated in some regard with parks, recreation or housing, 1 appointee shall be affiliated in some regard with libraries, museums or the arts, 1 appointee shall be affiliated with a social service agency serving youth and children.
