Groundwater Remediation

Los Reales Landfill

The 350-acre municipal Los Reales Landfill has been in operation by the City of Tucson since 1967.  It is located south of Los Reales Road between Craycroft and Swan Roads (Los Reales Landfill Site Map).  The landfill receives approximately 2000 tons of refuse per day.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) were detected in nearby monitor wells in 1989 and reported to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).  ADEQ placed the site on the State priority list for the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) in 1990.

Environmental Services Engineering & Technical Support installed a pump-and-treat groundwater remediation system at the Los Reales Landfill in February, 1999. This project was paid for with 1994 bond funds and was the recipient of the Outstanding Project in Groundwater Remediation for 1999 from the National Groundwater Association, and the Governor s Award for Energy Efficiency , November 2002. Since February 1999, the system has processed over 16 million gallons of groundwater and removed 4 pounds of PCE and 1.2 pounds of TCE. Up to 60% of the treated groundwater is re-used at the landfill for dust control and daily operations.
