Groundwater Remediation
Price Service Center
The Thomas O. Price Service Center is a primary fueling facility for the City of Tucson, and has been in operation since 1972. The facility is located at the
southwest corner of Ajo Way and Park Avenue (Thomas O. Price Service Center Site Map). Historically, the facility
maintained 23 twelve-thousand gallon underground storage tanks (USTs) for gasoline and diesel.
During the late 1980s, the UST system was found to have leaked an unknown amount of fuel into the soil below the fueling tanks, dispensers, and delivery piping. The tanks were emptied and removed from service in the early
1990's. The City, through its consultants, determined the extent of soil/groundwater impacts. With the approval of the surrounding neighborhood associations and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ),
Environmental Services Engineering & Technical Support determined the most effective method of remediation. The 1994 Bond Program allocated $4,500,000 for the design and construction of the soil/groundwater Remedial
Action System. All work is completed under the oversight of ADEQ.
Although original estimates indicated the need to remove and dispose of over 100 million gallons of groundwater over a 20 year period, the technology
selected treats the soil and the groundwater in place and avoids groundwater depletion.
In 1996, Environmental Services Engineering & Technical Support installed a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system at Price Service
Center.
In 1998, Environmental Services Engineering & Technical Support staff began removal of petroleum product from wells near Fire Station No.10 (just north of the Price Service Center) through the use of pneumatic skimmer pumps and periodic hand-bailing. By December of 2002, approximately 120,000 gallons of gasoline had been recovered from the soil and groundwater at the site.
