35 E. Toole Avenue

In 2003 the City of Tucson (City) received a $200,000 Brownfields Cleanup grant to remediate gasoline-contaminated soil at this former warehouse located within Tucson’s Historic Warehouse Arts District. The past uses of this property include a wholesale produce facility and a vehicle maintenance yard. Leaking underground storage tanks used for petroleum based products were on site until their removal in the early 1990’s. Soil samples indicate the site has been impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons.

Using the EPA Brownfields grant funds, the City designed and installed a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system to remediate the gasoline-contaminated soil. The system consists of two Extraction Wells and One Air Injection Well. The gasoline-contaminated vapor is extracted from the soil and burned off in a thermal oxidizer SVE unit. The SVE unit is being operated under a Pima County Department of Environmental Quality General Air Permit. The system operation is evaluated on a continual basis, until completion of remedial activities.
