The Tucson Fire Department (TFD) offers a number of career, promotional, and educational
opportunities for its members. After serving two years in rank, firefighters are eligible to
seek promotion to Engineer, Paramedic, or Fire Inspector. Training and education
for these positions are provided by the Tucson Fire Department. Once certification for any one of these
positions is obtained, a firefighter is then eligible to participate in that specific promotional
process. Once promoted, similar time in grade and educational requirements must be met to be
eligible to participate in the process to promote to Captain, and then to Battalion/Deputy Chief. The
educational and cerification programs necessary to qualify for advancement are available to all
members on an equal basis.
Continuing Education (CE) classes are provided on a quarterly basis to further train and encourage
professional growth. Four times a year, crews will go to the Tucson Fire Public Safety Academy and participate
in CE classes that usually combine class work and drill time. CE classes are also used to keep TFD member
qualification requirements up to date. In addition, Tucson Fire occasionally offers classes for members
to become certified in areas such as Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and others. All classes
are provided at no cost to the employee and are excellent resources for increasing skills and knowledge.
