What
is an emergency?
Remember
the last time you fell down and skinned your knee? You probably got an adult to clean you up and put a band-aid
on. Now, let’s say that you and a
friend are riding bikes one day. As
your friend turns a corner he crashes and falls down. When you go to check on him, he looks like he is asleep. He does not answer when you call his
name. Does this sound like an
emergency? If you said “Yes!” you are
absolutely correct! An emergency is a situation when someone is hurt very badly
and needs the help of a firefighter, paramedic or a police officer. Now let’s
have some fun while we learn more about emergencies:

Calling 911
Did
you know that you have your very own number to call in an emergency? That’s right, you ALWAYS dial 911 if you
need help from a firefighter, paramedic or a police officer. It is important to remember the following
rules when calling 911:
Talk slowly and calmly to the operator.
Give the operator any information they
ask for. This will probably be your
name, what the emergency is, and your address.
Don’t hang up until the operator says it
is okay to do so.
Do
exactly what the
operator tells you to do.
Call 911 ONLY
in a real emergency.
Ask an
adult to help you practice calling 911– but be sure to use a toy phone or a
cell phone that has the battery removed. Click the Stop sign below for a fun
