Do you play sports? Play a musical instrument? Get excellent grades in school?   You probably already know how much planning and practice go into being successful.  Having a fire in your house can be a scary thing to think about, but fire is an emergency that we need to plan and practice for.  Practicing how to get out of a fire quickly and safely is the success we want you plan for.  So what should you practice? What should you plan?  Let’s find out:

Smoke Detectors

Smoke is the most dangerous part of a fire, but having working smoke detectors can alert you and your family when a fire is just starting.  This gives you time to get out safely.  Click on the smoke detector below to play a fun game and hear what a smoke detector sounds like

Ask adults to install smoke detectors in every room of your house.  Adults can call the Tucson Fire Department at 791-4502 if they need smoke detectors or help installing them.

Who is E.D.I.T.H.?

Maybe you have an Aunt Edith or a Grandma Edith in your family?  Well, we have an E.D.I.T.H. in fire safety, and our E.D.I.T.H. can save lives!  E.D.I.T.H. stands for Exit Drills In the Home. Practicing and planning to get out of your house during a fire is very important.

Let’s start with your house:

Now that you have your escape plan ready here are some very important steps to practice:

If you are sleeping and you smell smoke or hear a smoke detector:

1.  Carefully roll out of bed.

2.  Stay low and crawl to your bedroom door.

3.  Feel the door with the back of your hand.

4.  If the door is not warm or hot open the door and get to the nearest exit.

5.  If the door is warm or hot crawl to your 2nd exit (window, other door).  If you

can’t get out with the 2nd exit just stay low and wait for the firefighters to come.

6.  Once you are safely outside go to your meeting place – DO NOT GO BACK IN !!
