Safety in the Car

Seat Belts

The best way to be sure that you are safe when riding in a car is to BUCKLE UP!  Forgetting to buckle up is dangerous for everyone riding in a car.  You can help everyone remember to stay safe by repeating this simple poem:

“A click for every person in the car, or we go nowhere near or far!!”

Behavior in the Car

When adults are driving, they need to focus all of their attention on the road and other drivers.  Avoid distracting adults while driving:

Don’t fight or argue with other passengers in the car.

Don’t ask adults questions unless you have something very important to say.

Use low inside voices when talking to other passengers.

Help to take care of babies and infants riding in the car – but be sure to stay buckled up when doing so.

Safety on a School Bus
Did you know that the most dangerous part of riding a school bus is getting on and exiting the bus?  Busses are huge and even though they have very large mirrors, drivers can’t always see everything.  You can help by practicing the following safety steps:

Getting On:
Never push or play around with friends when waiting for the bus.
Take 3 giant steps away from the bus when it arrives.
Find a seat quickly and follow all the rules for appropriate behavior on the bus.

Drop something near the bus? Don’t pick it up until you tell the bus driver or he may not see you.

Exiting:
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before standing up.
Never push or play around with friends as you exit the bus.
Take 5 giant steps away from the bus once you exit.
Cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk (or along the side of the road) to a point that’s at least 5 GIANT STEPS ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver
Check for traffic in both directions (remember: Look left, right, & left again) before crossing in front of the bus.
Never cross the street from behind the bus.

 Water Safety

Summertime may be your favorite time of year?  No school, plenty of sunshine and water, water, water!  Whether you cool off in a pool, lake, or river you need to follow some simple rules to stay safe in water.

If you can swim:

Swim with a buddy, never alone.

Don't dive or jump into the water. Always wade in first to avoid hitting your head on a shallow bottom.

Don't push or jump on others.

Never let small children or infants play alone around water.

Tell an adult immediately about an unsupervised child or infant.

Be prepared for an emergency by knowing how to dial 911.

Not a swimmer yet?

NEVER go near any water without an adult to watch you.

Summer storms

Tucson can be a very hot place to live.  During the summer we often get storms that bring rain and cooler temperatures.  These storms are called monsoon storms and usually happen between the months of July to August each year.  While the storms give us a break from the hot weather, they also bring some dangers that we need to avoid.

Lightning storms

The best way to stay safe from lightning is to stay indoors.

If you are caught outside:

Find shelter immediately!

Try to find shelter in a car if possible.

Never continue swimming, and return to shore if you're swimming in a lake or pond.

Don't hide under a tree.

Don't be the tallest object around –lightning tends to strike the highest target in an area. Stay low!

Avoid big, open areas such as baseball fields and golf courses.

Stay away from tall objects.

Avoid metal objects such as bleachers and chairs.

Inside the house during a lightning storm:

Stay off the phone.  Lightning can travel through electrical and phone currents.

Keep large appliances off, including TVs and computers.

Don't shower or bathe.

Flashfloods

Flashfloods are caused when large amounts of rainwater don’t soak into the ground during a storm.  The swift moving currents can cause our dry washes and low-lying areas to flood – and flood very quickly. These floods are extremely dangerous because of their strength and speed.  So although we welcome the water, we must follow some simple steps to enjoy the rain safely.

Never play in or near washes.  Sometimes a wash can flood even if there has been no rain in the area.

Never stand near the edge or allow others to stand near the edge of a flooded wash.

Never try to walk or ride through a flooded wash or a low spot in the road.  Even though the water may not look very high, the currents are strong enough to sweep even a car away.

Never walk or ride around any barricades or signs that have been put up around flooded areas. The barricades are there for YOUR safety.
