Statistics show that the rate of death from fire for senior citizens age 65+ is twice that of the general population.
After
age 85 the death rate is four times higher.
However, taking
some simple precautionary measures can decrease the risk of fire and burn
injuries in senior populations.
Install working smoke detectors
in each room of your home. Contact the Tucson Fire Department Public Education
Dept for information on free or low-cost smoke detectors (520) 791-4502
Test smoke detectors each month to be
sure they are functional.
Replace batteries in all smoke detectors
once a year. Determine an easy to remember date each year to complete this task
(anniversaries, birthdays, etc.).
Develop exit
drills in the event of a fire. Determine at least two exits from each room.
Practice exit drills with everyone who
lives in your home. Practice the drills
at night since that is when most deadly fires occur.
Do Not smoke when using oxygen
Use front burners when cooking and
avoid wearing clothing with long, loose sleeves to avoid accidental
ignition. Enroll in home-delivered meal
programs at the community food bank if
needed.
Visit the Pima Council on Aging
for additional information regarding the health and well being of older adults.
