GIS Cooperative Meeting
City of Tucson - Information Technology
Friday October 12, 2001
10:00 - 11:30 AM

Present: Donald Ijams, Ron Platt, Fran LaSala, Cheryl Van De Beuken, Mike Honomichl, Joe Jakoby, Greg McNeal, Blanca Espino, Kristi Jenkins, Mary Szczepanski, Dave Hochede and Teri Schultz

Solving Business Problems with GIS - Ron Platt

Ron gave a Powerpoint presentation showing some of the thought processes and experiences he and others have gone through in making GIS successful in the City's Department of Transportation. These experiences include putting DOT project information on the department's web site, developing management support programs using GIS (MapGuide/Cold Fusion) and supporting a data sharing committee.

CityScan/Master Address Database Project Update - David Hochede

There will be a presentation of CityScan to senior management at a City Manager's meeting tentatively scheduled for mid-November.

The Information Technology programming group is currently working on an area profile function for CityScan. This feature will allow a user to type in the name of a neighborhood or other area to learn about that area in a customized manner. The other major project is a batch processing series of programs that will allow periodic update of the master address file and of layers needed from the City/County shared GIS Library (MARS). A linked set of attribute tables will be used to provide information that goes along with a particular address, such as the City Ward, elementary school attendance area, or census tract the site is in.

GIS Training

GIS Concepts Course: The second version of this no cost introductory course is officially scheduled for Monday, November 19, 2001, 8:15 AM -11:45 AM. Location is Classroom 5 in the Fire Prevention Center at 797 E. Ajo Way. To register, please contact Sharon McCusker at TPD at 791-4822 or smccusk1@ci.tucson.az.us.

ArcView: Don recently taught a class on Introduction to ArcView 3.2 with good reviews. There may be another class in the works.

ArcIMS: The GIS Cooperative will be participating in bringing in this introductory class.

GIS Conferences

The ESRI Southwest Users Group (SWUG) Regional Conference will be here in Tucson October 22-26 at the Radisson Hotel City Center.

The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) Annual Training Conference will be October 21-25, 2001 in Long Beach, CA. The Cooperative is sponsoring attendance at both URISA and SWUG conferences.

Address Verification/Cleaning/Geocoding

Jessie Sanders was not in attendance to discuss addressing as it relates to the permits database for Development Services. The whole issue of address matching is important for people who have interest in data that is not already set up for GIS processing, so this will continue as an important topic.

Current Events and Accomplishments

Don will acquire a copy of the recently adopted Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with Pima County on GIS and place it on the web.

Tucson Electric has contacted us for participation in the group. It will be helpful for us to hear what they are doing with GIS and how we can work with them.

Jack Avis from Pima County Development Services is leaving employment one week from today for the private sector.

Other Business

Donald Ijams was elected to serve another one year term as chairman of the GIS Cooperative. He is very interested in hearing from the membership about new GIS issues and directions, training needs and ideas for meeting content.
