3D Modeling Demonstrations
The first 3D modeling presentation was from Autumn Figeuroa/Dave Koss. Autumn and Dave have been developing the techniques, processes and procedures for utilizing the CommunityViz software. Their demo showed a number of scenes and "fly- throughs" in the downtown area, especially around the MacArthur Bldg and the new Depot Plaza project. Their ability to create 3D worlds is much greater now than when they started a few months ago. For instance, what originally took days to complete may only take hours now. The hardest part is getting quality building images and building heights. All in all, this demo showed the very creative and technical competency available within the City of Tucson. The trick will be getting a person(s) assigned to do this kind of work in the future. The demo also showed how to apply this technology to the urban environment.
The second 3D modeling presentation was from Chris Mack at the Town of Marana. Chris used the ERDAS software with its "virtual GIS" module. Marana is a more rural city (town) and has some different 3D modeling needs. Chris showed projects that examined "regional" areas using several sections worth of data. Digital terrain data, ortho photos "draped" over the 3D surface models, and satellite images were all combined with "fly-throughs" and fixed scenes to show how the Town of Marana is using 3D modeling to make planning decisions and how they are offering the public a real world view of proposed developments.
Thank-you Autumn, Chris and Dave for the great show!!
PAREGION Change Management
Steve Whitney informed us that he now has a process in place to track changes in PAREGION (Pima County Parcel Base). The details of Steve's process have been posted on the Cooperative's listserv GeoWIZ. If anyone needs clarification on this, I will be glad to facilitate discussion with Steve.
