New GIS Coop Intern - Linda Coon, PC DSD - Congratulations to Kaoru Johansen on her new position as GIS Intern! Kaoru brings a wide range of GIS experience to the table and is sure to continue the great work that Johnathan Z. had done previously. - Welcome aboard, Kaoru! - Linda Coon explained that the Kaoru will be working on, but not limited to: address quality reports, Development Systems Parcel Search, and producing monthly reports Thanks, Linda! 4. Open ArcGIS License - Dave Koss - Dave Koss suggested, (which has been discussed by the Education Subcommittee), that the Coop purchase one server-based license of ArcGIS for use by any GIS Coop members (COT only, at this point) to share when available. In other words, this would be a city-wide license that could be used by anybody who reserves the copy for use - Groupwise (COT's email system) was suggested as a reservation system for this open license use - It was mentioned that idea could give those who wish to make the initial transition into GIS, those who wish to migrate from ArcGIS 3.x to Arc 8.x, those who wish to develop programming/coding skills, etc. could benefit from this - The setup would work like this (simplified version): the ArcGIS software is installed on the user's PC, the license is installed on a server at COT IT, and when a user needs to use it, they login and start using ArcGIS (provided it isn't reserved by anyone else but that person). - Licensing with other organizations outside of COT was mentioned and still needs to be researched, as there may be legal issues that have to be covered. The Coop sincerely hopes that this level of sharing will become a reality in the very near future Thanks, Dave! 5. Education Subcommittee - Larry - The Education Subcommittee has met twice and has discussed some ideas that will be developed some more by the next Coop meeting. Some of those ideas are: - Mini-course curriculum - Open license cost and availability - Survey on what training/education members have, would like to have, and what can they teach on. - Training room research and hosting. The effort is to get details on where training rooms are available, the kind of electronic access they offer, and to get other member organizations involved with hosting such training events - Melisa will teaching three people from the Town of Sahuarita on ArcView 3.2. Congratulations to Melisa on her first class! - ESRI virtual campus Thanks to Autumn, Dave, and Melisa for volunteering their time and energies! 6. Open Floor - Bryn Enright is looking for an automated rectification process when working with aerial photos - New orthos will be available in the Fall of 2005 - Anita Velasco of COT General Services mentioned that a $1 million RFP for GIS activities is being conducted by the State's Department of Administration in support of Cochise, Santa Cruz, and Pinal counties (ongoing contract). Please contact her for more information on this topic at: Anita.Velasco@tucsonaz.gov or Adam Iten, State of AZ 911 GIS Coordinator, at the State of Arizona's Department of Administration - 602.771.3911 - adam.iten@ad.state.az.us - It was mentioned that we may need to start planning for a bigger GIS budget and become more organized in allocating funding for activities and resources we wish to procure. This issue will be examined over the next few months - COT is holding a "Presenting on Technical Topics" class on May 25th for COT employees who feel the need to brush up on such items. - COT EM has sent $8,000 to PAG for Pictometry photos as promised - The ESRI International Users Conference is going from July 25th to the 29th. Cost is $1295 for the duration of the regular conference or $425 per day. In the past, we have taken account of who has complimentary registration in order to facilitate the passage of more members (who did not have the funding) to the conference. However, it was brought up at the April Coop meeting that the guidelines regarding comp passes has been tightened. You can find the facts at: http://www.esri.com/events/uc/registration/comp_guidelines.html We already have one request to go. If you would like to go, please let me know ASAP. We can only send a two or three at the most (with normal Coop funding, and unfortunately, only COT employees at that). Preference will be for those who have never been to a conference or the international conference. Thanks for understanding! Remember, if you know of anybody or organization that would benefit from membership, please let me know! Thanks to all of you who brought forth great open floor topics! Larry |
