2. Business

  • Education: SAIAT will have an ArcGIS Level 1 class in October and November and an ArcGIS Level 2 class in November and December. Jennifer Sborov noted that the Building Geodatabase class went well and they might host another Building Geodatabase class in the Spring 2008.
  • GIS Intern position: Peter Johnson informed the committee that GIS Intern position has been filled by an engineering management student from UA but a start date has yet to be determined.
  • PAG Ortho ’08 Project: Mr. Johnson noted that the PAG Ortho 2008 committee has narrowed the list of vendors to two companies. The flight will include 4 inch resolution for the core urban area and 1-foot resolution for the remainder. They will also be obtaining LIDAR, 35 square miles of DTMs, and will be covering western Cochise County and most of Benson and southern Pinal County to catch the Red Rock community being built by Pulte.
  • GDB Subcommittee: Mr. Johnson commented that the subcommittee met recently and is using the stnetall.gdb as the test case. They are working through issues with the linear referencing.
  • Pictometry: Dave Koss  provided an update on the cost of purchasing the 2005 PAG Pictometry Pilot Project oblique imagery of 37 square miles.  Pictometry offered to do an new 2007 Flight of 250 square miles that would include the 2005 images, and 250 square miles of imagery from a 2006 flight that Pictometry flew in the valley. The new imagery would include 4-inch orthogonal imagery (250 square miles), plus the obliques (4 way) with unlimited licensing for $76,000.  The Pima County Assessor’s Office is very interested in this package and would be able to help fund the purchase.  Mr. Koss will try to have a presentation for the Co-op at the next meeting and proposed that the Co-op provide $10,000-15,000 to assist with the purchase.  He noted that there is another vendor as well that could also provide oblique imagery to the region and PAG would probably go out with an RFP.  Please e-mail Mr. Koss (dave.koss@tucsonaz.gov ) with any comments since he will bring this issue up for a vote at the October 16, 2007 meeting.
  • IT GIS Core Action Items: Gage Andrews attended the first meeting of the Pima County Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security last month. This seven person entity has been charged with coordinating cross-city responses to an area-wide emergency as mandated by federal law. Next Spring they will conduct a mock disaster event and a full-scale mock disaster event next Fall. Mr. Andrews has asked several members of the Co-op for assistance in fulfilling the 6 requirements for Emergency Management, Resource Support, Urban Security, Public Safety Security, Oil & Hazards Security, and Long-term Continuity and Management. Currently, members are assisting in the creation of an inventory of City of Tucson generated maps that are on the Pima County servers. In 2-3 months, he will return to the Co-op with the inventory and ask for ideas where these maps and their supporting layers can be stored and accessed on emergency basis.

3. Events

Blanca Espino announced that the GIS Fair Day will be held on Friday, November 16. She has talked with Vernon Woods of Pima County and said that they would like to plan on doing something new this year. Maybe have 25 minute presentations every 30 minutes, other vendors (booths), other jurisdiction demonstrations. Vernon is looking for any ideas or suggestions. If you're interested or want to make a suggestion or share any ideas or help volunteer, please contact Blanca Espino at Blanca.Espino@tucsonaz.gov

4. Presentation: Business Analyst Extension

Paul Bailey, ESRI Commercial Account Manager for ESRI Denver Region

Colleen Burke, ESRI Arizona City/County Government Account Manager

Jason Channin, Technical Marketing Representative for the ESRI Denver Region

ArcGIS Business Analyst combines ESRI's leading GIS technology with extensive business, demographic, and consumer data to assist users with critical decisions such as analyzing the market and competition, finding the ideal site for a new business location, or targeting direct mail. ArcGIS Business Analyst allows users to perform sophisticated business analysis in one easy-to-use application.

Business Analyst data can also be used by government agencies to assist in showing business and population growth in a region, quick demographic reports, and determining ideal sites for new business locations. Several government agencies in Colorado are using this extension for economic development, assisting the agencies in bringing businesses into the communities.

The presentation is available for view here. If you have any questions, please e-mail Ms. Burke at cburke@esri.com

5. Possible topics or new business for future meetings:

Currently the 2007 ESRI Users’ Conference Proceedings that the Co-op purchased are only available to City of Tucson employees who can access the intranet GIS site. The licensing agreement will be reviewed by Mr. Andrews to see if there is a way the Proceedings can be placed on the Co-op’s website so all members may access the presentations.
