Mosquito Activity on the Increase
Recent breaks in the monsoon have allowed mosquitoes to breed and eggs to hatch. Now, residents in Tucson and throughout Pima County must take extra precautions to avoid being bitten and possibly contract West Nile Virus.
As of September 12 state testing: one WNV-positive human case and two WNV-positive pools with mosquitoes in Pima County. Numbers have increased sharply in counties north of Pima.
The following information and resources can help residents remain safe through the remainder of the mosquito season, which lasts for another couple of months.
Basic Information:
Not all mosquitoes are carriers of the West Nile Virus. However, more mosquitoes increase the chances of transmission of the disease.
Check your property for standing water. Mosquito eggs need water to be undisturbed for three days in order to hatch. Vacant properties, especially those with pools, are ideal sources for mosquito habitats. If water cannot be eliminated, treat or recirculate on regular basis.
Repair window, door screens, etc., to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
For personal protection, use insect repellents with DEET, Picaridan, IR3535 or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Wear protective clothing and limit time outdoors from dusk till dawn.
