The Human Resources Department reports to the City Manager through the Deputy City Manager. The Director is appointed by the City Manager and serves as the Executive Secretary of the Civil Service Commission. The employees of the Human Resources Department provide staff assistance to the Civil Service Commission.
The Human Resources Department provides other City departments and employees personnel services in accordance with the policies and programs of the Mayor and Council, Civil Service Commission and the City Manager. To achieve these policies, the Human Resources Department is divided into four major divisions: Administration, Employment Services, Employee Support Services, and Employee Education Services.
The City of Tucson allows five preference points to be added to the passing score of any applicant who was honorably discharged after six months active service in a U.S. armed force. This also applies to the spouse of a person who died while in military service, was missing in action for at least 90 days, or was a prisoner of war. Five points will be added to the passing score of any applicant having a disability which substantially limits one or more major life activities. When applicable, five points will be added to the passing score of Native Americans with appropriate documentation.
