Featured Project: Midtown National Register Nomination Program
Description
The Historic Preservation Office is working with two midtown neighborhoods,
Catalina Vista and Blenman-Elm, to assist them in preserving the historic
character of their neighborhoods. Grant funding has been received from
the Arizona Heritage Fund to produce a National Register nomination for
Catalina Vista and to do a partial Historic Resource Inventory for Blenman-Elm.
Products will include neighborhood history, photos and inventory forms
for every house in Catalina Vista and approximately one-half of Blenman-Elm.

Partners
The entire project is a collaborative effort between the two neighborhoods,
the Arizona Historical Society, the University of Arizona College of Architecture,
and the City of Tucson Historic Preservation Office. Both neighborhoods
are providing cash match to the project as well as the volunteer time.
The city is also providing some matching funds and administrative oversight
of the grant.
Impact
Two years ago, the city was approached by the two neighborhood associations
about the possibility of listing with the National Register of Historic
Places. In preparation for submittal of a grant to the Arizona Heritage
Fund, training programs were developed in partnership with the Arizona
Historical Society and the University of Arizona College of Architecture
to assist residents in researching the history of their properties, conducting
oral history interviews, and identifying architectural styles in the two
neighborhoods. National Register listing provides access to property tax
reductions and grant funds to improve properties, as well as increasing
neighborhood pride and involvement.
