Featured Project: High Tech Training Program
Description
Nearly 50% of American workers have low literacy skills and the number
of available low-skill jobs that provide a livable wage is decreasing
as the economy relies more on knowledge and information. The High Tech
Training program assists motivated, low-paid workers to enter new, higher-paying
careers and helps local employers meet their need for trained technicians
from the local workforce.
Key Features
- The program consists of three components:
- The Precursor Training increases basic proficiency skills and provides
the necessary foundation for additional technical training.
- The Assembler track addresses employer needs for assemblers with basic
math and technology skills; qualified graduates are eligible for entry-level
jobs that pay between $7.50 and $11 per hour.
- The Electronic Technician track prepares participants to compete for
Hi-Tech tester jobs upon completion of the program; these jobs start
at $11 to $17 per hour.

Impact
The High Tech Training Program helps underemployed workers obtain the
skills needed to work in skilled, high paying jobs. Programs such as this
raise the quality of life for participants and help attract high paying
jobs to our community. On November 22, 1999 thirty-five students received
certificates from the mayor recognizing their graduation from the "High
Tech-High Wage Basic Electro/Mechanical" program.
