Featured Project: Tucson-México Project

Description
The Tucson-México Project, operated from Office of the City Manager, was established to enhance public-private business relationships with Mexico and represent the City of Tucson on matters related to Mexico. This link between the government and business sectors of both regions has resulted in increased business opportunities within the Mexican maquila industry for local businesses and a friendlier business climate in Tucson for Mexican businesspersons and visitors. While the project's initial focus was aimed at Tucson's tourism industry - hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets - the project has begun to devote a greater effort to assist wholesalers and manufacturers in marketing themselves in Mexico.

Key Features

  • Assistance to Tucson retailers interested in attracting and serving the Mexican customer
  • Assistance to Tucson businesses who wish to do business in Mexico
  • Assistance to Tucson businesses who wish to do business with Mexican businesses

Partners
Project partners include the Metropolitan Tucson Chamber of Commerce, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and their corresponding offices in Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico. Other key players include the Greater Tucson Economic Council, the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Sonoran Office of the Arizona Governor Jane Hull. Other city departments such as the offices of Intergovernmental Affairs and Economic Development, Transportation, and the Tucson Convention Center provide additional resources.

Impact
By helping promote local businesses in foreign markets, the Tucson-México Project is increasing opportunities for better-paying jobs and providing for a better understanding of our area's cultural resources.
