FREE BLACK HISTORY AND THE PRESIDIO WORKSHOP SET FOR JUNE 23
Presidio San Agustin del Tucson, located at the southwest corner of Church Avenue and Washington Street , will host a free workshop entitled Black History and the Presidio Saturday, June 23 from 1-3 p.m.
Presented by Tucson Parks and Recreation, the agency temporarily maintaining and operating the site, the workshop will include a brief tour of the facility and a presentation by Gloria Smith, retired University of Arizona historian.
The workshop will focus on African-American heritage and history from the Spanish era through the territorial period of the area surrounding the Presidio.
Workshop attendees are welcome to bring and share any information they might have on the subject.
This is the first of four free historical perspective workshops presented by Parks and Recreation. Upcoming topics include: July-Native Americans and the Columbian Exchange Period; August-Tucson's birthday and history of the City; and September-focus on the Mexican Period.
Admission to the Presidio, a replica of a Spanish era walled fortress, is free. Hours of operation are Wednesday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
