DEDICATION SET FOR EL RIO CENTER TEEN MURAL EFFORT JUNE 22
A colorful mural that honors the neighborhood and was created by local youth will be dedicated Friday, June 22 at 6 p.m. at the El Rio Center outdoor amphitheater, 1390 W. Speedway .
The $5,000 project, entitled Running Water (Agua Corriendo), was funded by a grant from the Raza Youth Philanthropy Project ($2,000) and co-sponsored by Tucson Parks and Recreation ($3,000).
Local teens, all participants in the El Rio Center's teen program, worked under the direction of Tucson art teacher Paloma Jacqueline to create and install the mural which contains messages about learning, growth and nurturing the neighborhood.
More than 60 youth were involved in various phases of the project. Project planning and research began in summer 2006.
Taking part in the dedication ceremony will be Ward 1 Council Member Jose Ibarra, Parks and Recreation Director Fred Gray and a representative from Raza.
