Goals and Objectives for the Ground Snake
Implementation of anticipated covered activities may result in the loss of potential habitat in Avra Valley as a result of water development projects. Direct take of snakes is not likely. Mortality may occur when snakes are hit by vehicles while crossing roads. The indirect effects of these development projects may impact the snake through impacts to soil conditions, loss of native vegetation, reduction in native prey base, disturbance by humans, e.g., construction and facility maintenance activities. This species is known to occur within areas of urban development.
1. Provide for long-term availability of suitable habitat for ground snakes.
a. Permanently protect suitable ground snake habitat within the City of Tucson planning area.
b. Protect essential habitat elements to maintain long-term productivity of habitat.
c. Limit disturbances near protected ground snake habitat.
d. Support research to improve understanding of ground snake habitat requirements.
e. Work with other jurisdictions and entities to identify and implement strategies to minimize disturbance to suitable ground snakes habitat in northern Avra Valley.
2. Minimize potential for mortality of ground snakes.
a. Reduce potential for loss of ground snakes to domestic cats and dogs.
b. Reduce potential for loss of ground snakes to vehicle strikes.
c. Educate target audience about need and ways to minimize threats to ground snakes.
3. Reduce barriers to movement for ground snakes.
