Goals and Objectives for the Pima pineapple cactus

Implementation of anticipated covered activities may result in the loss of potential habitat in the Southlands due to urban development and associated infrastructure. Direct take of Pima pineapple cactus individuals is a consequence of development-associated ground disturbance activities. The indirect effects of urban development may impact the cactus through impacts to pollinators and seed dispersers, invasion or increased densities of exotic plants, disturbance by humans, e.g., off-road vehicle use and recreation activities. Long-term effects may include fragmentation of habitat and isolation of habitat patches that results in restricted gene flow among the population.

Goal:

    1. Contribute to maintaining local and regional populations of Pima pineapple cactus.

Specific Objectives:

    1. Provide for long-term availability of suitable habitat for Pima pineapple cactus.

    2. Minimize loss of Pima pineapple cactus individuals.

Conservation Measures:

    1. Provide for long-term availability of suitable habitat for Pima pineapple cactus.

    a. Permanently protect suitable Pima pineapple cactus habitat within the City of Tucson planning area.

    b. Protect essential habitat elements to maintain long-term productivity of foraging habitat.

    c. Support research to improve understanding of Pima pineapple cactus habitat and life cycle requirements and distribution.

    2. Minimize loss of Pima pineapple cactus individuals.

    a. Minimize loss of Pima pineapple cactus individuals due to development activities.

    b. Educate target audience about need and ways to minimize threats to Pima pineapple cactus.

    c. Work with other jurisdictions and entities to identify and implement strategies to protect Pima pineapple cactus populations outside of the City of Tucson planning area.

    d. Support research to improve understanding of Pima pineapple cactus habitat and life cycle requirements and response to disturbances.
