Goals and Objectives for the Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Implementation of anticipated covered activities may result in the loss of potential habitat in Avra Valley as a result of water development projects and alterations of potential habitat, both losses and gains, resulting from the implementation of riparian restoration projects along the Santa Cruz River. Direct take of cuckoos is unlikely. Mortality may occur when cuckoos are struck by vehicles while crossing bridges. The indirect effects of urban development may impact the cuckoo through introduction or spread of invasive non-native species, reductions in native prey base, and disturbance by humans, e.g., off-road vehicle use in washes. The most significant threat to this species is loss of breeding habitat through impacts to ground and surface water resources that result in loss of hydroriparian habitat. The City of Tucson planning area currently contains no suitable breeding habitat.

Goal:

    1. Contribute to maintaining local and regional populations of yellow-billed cuckoos.

Specific Objectives:

    1. Provide for long-term availability of suitable dispersal habitat for yellow-billed cuckoos.

    2. Minimize potential for mortality of yellow-billed cuckoos.

Conservation Measures:

    1. Provide for long-term availability of suitable dispersal habitat for yellow-billed cuckoos.

    a. Permanently protect suitable yellow-billed cuckoo dispersal habitat within the City of Tucson planning area.

    b. Protect essential habitat elements to maintain long-term productivity of yellow-billed cuckoo dispersal habitat.

    c. Support research to improve understanding of yellow-billed cuckoo dispersal habitat requirements.

    d. Work with other jurisdictions and entities to identify and implement strategies to minimize disturbance to suitable yellow-billed cuckoo dispersal habitat in Avra Valley and along the Santa Cruz River corridor.

    2. Minimize potential for mortality of yellow-billed cuckoos.

    a. Reduce potential for loss of yellow-billed cuckoos to vehicle strikes.

    b. Reduce potential for loss of yellow-billed cuckoos to raptors.
