NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN PROJECT:
A Prototype Project

The Neighborhood Plan Project is being sponsored by the City of Tucson Department of Urban Planning & Design, with the University of Arizona Drachman Institute overseeing the planning in collaboration with two neighborhoods -- Jefferson Park and Miramonte.

A process that includes a neighborhood inventory, a steering committee, and public meetings has been used to develop draft neighborhood plans for the two neighborhoods. Residents, businesses, and institutions within each neighborhood have participated in identifying what makes the neighborhood distinctive and special and how those qualities may be preserved and enhanced while meeting needs of the neighborhood and the city at large.

The draft neighborhood plans are going through final reviews by their respective Steering Committees, following which each will presented at a public meeting for further comment. Once the plans are finalized, Urban Planning and Design staff will take the plans through the City approval process. This process will include presentation of the plans to the Planning Commission and to Mayor and Council, with ongoing opportunities for public comment.

The overall Neighborhood Plan Project will be evaluated this summer to determine how the process, or elements of the process, can be used by other neighborhoods that would like to prepare or update neighborhoods plans.
