The principal task of the Victim Notification and Assistance staff is to provide victims a measure of control over their victim status. This is done by informing victims of upcoming court dates so that they may appear at court hearings and by supplying victims with practical knowledge about court procedures and their options.  The Prosecuter's Office also offer the presence of a victim assistant at court hearings and refers victims to outside helping agencies whenever it is appropriate.

State Mandated Notice
Victim Notification and Assistance provides written and telephonic notice to state-mandated crime victims. Mandated crimes are those misdemeanors involving physical injury or the threat of physical injury or a sexual offense(see a more complete list under Mandated Charges below). Victims of mandated crimes receive written and/or telephonic notice of upcoming court dates and information about victims' rights under the Arizona Constitution and state law, as well as information about their legal options. They also receive an explanation of typical proceedings in Tucson City Court, restitution information, and referral to a variety of helping agencies in the Tucson area.

Mandated Charges
Mandated crimes include certain charges with a domestic violence prefix (DV): DV-assault, DV-disorderly conduct where there exists a threat of physical injury, DV-endangerment, DV-false imprisonment, DV-telephone threats, DV-child abuse, DV-aggravated assault, DV-threats and intimidation, and DV-criminal trespass of a sexual nature. Additionally, the Prosecutor's Office provides courtesy notices regarding court dates in all other DV misdemeanors. Examples of these types of cases include: DV-disorderly conduct without injury, DV-interfering with judicial proceedings, DV-criminal trespass (non-sexual nature), and DV-criminal damage. Other mandated crimes which are non-DV include assault with injury or threat of injury, aggravated assault waived to a misdemeanor with injury or threat of physical injury, biting/vicious animal, discharge of a firearm with a victim and with injury or threat of physical injury, indecent exposure, leaving the scene of an accident with physical injury, lewd and lascivious acts, peeping tom/first degree criminal trespass, public sexual indecency, reckless driving with injury or accident, and threats and intimidation. Additional mandated charges include child abuse and neglect, aggravated assault on a child, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, as well as DUI involving a victim, and traffic accidents involving death or personal injury.

Non-Mandated Notice
It is the policy of the Prosecutor’s Office to also notify victims of crimes that do not fall under the state’s mandated victims rights law. Victims of non-mandated crimes receive written and/or telephonic notice of their restitution rights and any scheduled restitution hearings. They also receive a pamphlet explaining general court procedures and a list of phone numbers to call for more information.

Non-Mandated Charges
Non-mandated charges include contracting without a license, criminal damage, criminal littering or polluting, failure to return rental property, reckless burning, shoplifting, theft, and joy riding.
