Stimulus Funds Will Assist with Home Weatherization, Youth Work Programs
Arizona Weatherization Program
The Tucson Urban League, Inc. has been awarded $4.75M in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds over three years to expand its weatherization program for qualified homeowners.
The funds, allocated through the U.S. Department of Energy, can be used for home repairs that include adequate insulation, energy-efficient furnaces and water heaters, caulking and sealing, and general care to reduce a home's energy footprint.
Lower utility bills for homeowners will help America lower its energy consumption. In addition, Tucson 's workforce will expand as the League adds 10-to-15 people and employs several subcontractors for these services.
Various Youth Work Experience Programs
Tucson Urban League, Inc. was also awarded $718,000 in ARRA funds for Youth Work Experience summer programs for participants ages 14-24.
The programs offer knowledge and skills to help area youths obtain, retain or advance to a better position in the work force. Some of the training includes paid employment opportunities.
Related programs assist with academic instruction on educational basics to encourage students to stay in school or successfully transition into the workplace.
