Nearmont Landfill FAQ
Where is the old landfill located?
The Nearmont Landfill is located directly south of the proposed Clearwater Drive Right of Way.
What was disposed of there?
Household refuse and construction debris.
What is the City doing at the Neamont Landfill?
Before any development can occur on the site, the landfill needs to be stabilized. This is being done by
accelerating the decomposition of the waste by using an in situ aerobic bioreactor. A description of the project is
provided on the web page.
What is the timeline for the plan?
The bioreactor remediation process for the landfill site is planned to be complete by the end of 2008.
What are the laws that regulate this situation?
City of Tucson Ordinance No.10037 available at www.ci.tucson.az.us/esd/landfillord.pdf.
Arizona Department of Environmental Regulation Voluntary Remediation Program under Site Code 504075-00.
After the remediation project is completed, what plans does the City have for the land over the landfill?
Yes. The Rio Nuevo project Interpretive Center, gardens and grounds will be constructed on the landfill site when
the remediation project is complete.
Are there dangers to me and my family?
No. The "Mercado District" housing area is north of the landfill and will not be affected by the landfill remediation
project or the proposed development.
How does this affect my home's property value?
After the landfill remediation project is complete and the site is developed, the proposed construction of the
Historical Society and gardens complex will enhance the area.
