Employees in these classifications earn 104 hours of sick leave and 104 hours of vacation leave annually. Vacation accrual rates increase with seniority. Sick Leave balances are unlimited and Vacation balances have a cap of 288 hours.

The Transportation Department is seeking a highly qualified individual to join our team. The successful candidate will actively support and uphold the City's stated mission and values. Additionally, the person will perform highly professional management, administrative, supervisory, and planning duties associated with the Public Transit Division. This is an exciting opportunity to oversee the public transit responsibilities of the Tucson Department of Transportation including management of Sun Tran (the City's fixed route service), Van Tran (the City's paratransit service) and grant sub-recipients. Examples of responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic policy direction and recommendations for the City of Tucson and regional transit system

  • Providing professional guidance to staff engaged in the management of transit operations, grant management and eligibility determination

  • Managing contracts governing Sun Tran, Sun Van and Sun Link

  • Applying for and administering grants received from the Federal Transit Administration, other Federal and State agencies to include maintenance of working relationships with sub-recipients

  • Supervising and participating in the preparation and administration of the Division's capital and operating budgets, and reviewing the budgets for Sun Tran and Van Tran

  • Managing transit-related capital projects

  • Managing and performing negotiation, development, administration, monitoring and evaluation of complex contracts

  • Overseeing certification of eligibility for paratransit services

  • Overseeing determination of eligibility for reduced-fare services

  • Preparing and conducting presentation to public groups, agencies and advisory committees, establishing and maintaining relationships with governmental agencies, and organizing, directing and participating in public meeting and seminars as requested


  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering field, Business Management or closely related field

  • Over five years of supervisory management experience in engineering, transportation projects and programs

  • Valid drivers license required

  • An equivalent combination of experience, training, and certification that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions may be considered.
    **Supervisory management experience is defined as supervising two or more supervisors.**


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five years of experience in public improvements design, contract documents preparation, and project cost estimating and scheduling

  • Experience in contract negotiation and dispute resolution

  • Experience with urban design and land use planning issues

  • Experience with public relations, administrative liaison, and public outreach
