Tucson Challenge 2006: 4 years and still creating successful Tucson LOSERS!

A Physical Activity and Weight Loss Program
The Tucson Challenge is encouraging citizens to get fit for a fourth year in 2006. Whether Tucson residents participated in the Challenge in the past or are thinking about joining for the first time, the Tucson Challenge is designed to increase awareness of healthy lifestyle habits and motivate everyone to be more active.  The Challenge is coordinated by the University of Arizona’s Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition, and the City of Tucson. Key sponsors for the program are PacifiCare, University Medical Center, University of Arizona College of Medicine and University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The City of Tucson, the State of Arizona and Performance Footwear have given additional support.

What is the Challenge?
The Tucson Challenge is a team fitness and weight loss program designed to increase physical activity levels and provide skill development and social support for healthy lifestyle habits.

A series of 4 Saturday workshops from 9-11 a.m. will be offered in the community addressing the key behavioral elements of the program: physical activity, nutrition and eating behavior, mind/body connection, and social support. All Saturday workshops are held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., in Duval Auditorium of University Medical Center (NW corner of Speedway and Campbell). There will be free parking.

Workshops are scheduled for:

  • January 28:  Kick-Off Event
  • February 4:  Move it to Lose it!
  • March 4: Simply Healthy Eating
  • April 1: What’s Your Relationship with Food? and The Body Image & Self Esteem Connection
  • April 29:  Social Support=Success!

All of the education centers on the idea of developing a healthy lifestyle that can be maintained and enjoyed for a lifetime.

What is different about the Challenge?
This is the first time any city weight loss competition has emphasized the maintenance of weight loss by making long-term lifestyle changes. A unique aspect of the program is to promote long-term changes in lifestyle choices (healthy eating and regular physical activity) that foster maintenance of weight loss. All participants from the 2003 Mayor’s Challenge and 2004 and 2005 Tucson Challenges are invited to weigh-in at the January weigh-in.

The 2006 Tucson Challenge is especially unique because we promote the development of healthy eating habits and physical activity and lifestyle behaviors. We do not advocate any diet plan and we provide the latest sound information on what works from a weight loss research perspective.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Community organizations and businesses can contribute to the Tucson Challenge in a variety of ways: financial sponsorship, and in-kind services and products for participants. Financial participation from the community will enable us to expand our reach within Tucson, bring the Tucson Challenge to your employee workforce, and create a valuable partnership with other businesses concerned about the health of our community.
