Using Gray Water

Gray water is a valuable resource as it makes “double use” of water that otherwise goes down the drain. Gray water systems divert some interior water from clothes washers, bathtubs, showers or bathroom sinks (but not from a kitchen sink, dishwasher or toilet) for use in outdoor irrigation. Recently, State law has been changed to allow residential use of gray water without obtaining a special permit. While some care must be taken in using gray water, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) publishes some simple guidelines for using this valuable alternative water supply. Visit the ADEQ site for a downloadable copy of an informative brochure.

You can also find some information on a simple gray water system on page 30 of our Homeowners Guide to Using Water Wisely.

In addition, the State of Arizona offers a tax credit for the installation of a gray water system: Application for Arizona State Tax Credit for Greywater.
