Using Greywater

Greywater is a valuable resource as it makes “double use” of water that otherwise goes down the drain. Greywater systems divert some interior water from clothes washers, bathtubs, showers or bathroom sinks (but not from a kitchen sink, dishwasher or toilet) for use in outdoor irrigation. Recently, State law has been changed to allow residential use of greywater without obtaining a special permit. While some care must be taken in using greywater, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) publishes some simple guidelines for using this valuable alternative water supply. Visit the ADEQ site for a downloadable copy of an informative brochure.

This information is now also available in a more compact pamphlet format:

You can also find some information on a simple greywater system on page 30 of our Homeowners Guide to Using Water Wisely.
