Planning & New Development

Tucson Water is responsible not just for the water that we serve today, but also for the water resources that we will need in the future. Our planners and engineers make sure that our water system is designed properly and is capable of meeting the needs of current and future Tucson Water customers, and is protected from accidental contamination caused by Backflow of non-potable water into the drinking water system. In addition to ensuring that our water system can deliver the drinking water we need, they are also responsible for our growing Reclaimed Water system, which allows us to recycle our community's wastewater for use as an irrigation and industrial water supply. This critical renewable water resource replaces drinking water on a gallon-for-gallon basis and makes up about 8% of the water we deliver to customers each year.

Tucson Water takes seriously its role as a community steward in planning for a bright water future. Tucson Water recently completed a draft Long-Range Water Resources Plan. Because the future cannot be predicted, Water Plan 2000-2050 was developed by Tucson Water to have maximum flexibility in meeting the challenges of the future.
