Why Are You Digging Up My Street?
Over the years, as Tucson grew, many iron and galvanized water pipes and mains were installed to serve housing developments. Your city water department acquired those water lines as our community expanded. These old, deteriorating mains are expensive to maintain and can contribute to water quality problems such as color or poor taste and odor.
Tucson Water has been replacing these old and worn water mains throughout the community since 1981. This replacement and improvement program was accelerated in 1994 and will be continued until all of the 220 miles of problem mains are replaced (175 miles of galvanized steel and 45 miles of cast iron). This work will make our water system more reliable and reduce the possibility that our customers will experience colored water problems due to old mains.
Unfortunately, the only way these pipes can be replaced is by installing new pipes in the ground. During this construction, some inconvenience to neighborhoods and to the traveling public is unavoidable. Tucson Water is conducting an extensive customer relations and information program to help reduce the inconvenience and to create as little disruption as possible in the neighborhoods and streets where main replacements must take place.
With your help we can improve Tucson's water system. If you live in an area where a main replacement project is planned, you will receive notice through the mail well in advance of the beginning of the project. You will be invited to a meeting held in your neighborhood where you will meet with representatives from Tucson Water and the construction contractor.
