Potential Testing Process

Written Examination

All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 40% of the final score for those placed on the Employment List.

Initial Oral Board

Another component of the testing process is the Oral Board. During this portion of the testing process, the candidate will be asked a series of questions to aid the Tucson Fire Department in the selection process. All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 60% of the final score for those placed on the Employment List.

Note: Upon completion of the written examination and the initial oral board, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on a ranked Civil Service Employment List. Those highest-ranking applicants will be invited to participate in the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Successful candidates will then be invited to a final interview. Candidates will be re-ranked based on their final interview score. Selection for the next Firefighter Recruit class will be based on this revised final ranking.

Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) Orientation

All applicants invited to participate in the INITIAL ORAL BOARD are also provided an opportunity to attend a voluntary Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Orientation.

These orientations provide an overview of the CPAT requirements and testing process. Candidates will watch a video on the CPAT describing how to successfully pass the exam with an explanation of the failure points and will also receive preparation tips.

During these sessions, the candidates will receive "hands-on" familiarity with the test apparatus and receive guidance on specific conditioning regiments and techniques to help them prepare for the test. These Orientations are not required, but are strongly encouraged.

Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) Preparation, CPAT Orientation Guides and video are available at:

Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) Timed Practice

Candidates, who are placed on the Civil Service Employment List and are invited to participate in CPAT testing, will be provided instructions on how to select a time slot to perform a full timed run through the complete CPAT course. Participation in at least one timed practice session is considered mandatory. However, if a candidate elects to opt out of both timed practices, a waiver acknowledging that the candidate was offered but declined to participate in a timed practice session must be signed prior to participating in the final CPAT test.

Candidates may participate once in each timed practice session for a total of two timed practices. If a candidate achieves a passing time in one of the timed practice sessions, this will count as an "official pass" and the candidate will not need to attend the final CPAT test.
This format allows each candidate three opportunities (two timed practices and the final CPAT) to pass the CPAT portion of the firefighter testing process. It is strongly encouraged that candidates participate in the timed practice sessions for this reason.

Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT)

This is a Pass/Fail physical fitness test for those candidates who are placed on the Civil Service Employment List. Participation is by invitation only based on one’s ranking on the Employment List. This is a final, single session, opportunity to pass the CPAT and there are no “do-overs” within this session. Candidates who are unsuccessful will have their name permanently removed from the Employment List and will not receive further consideration.

Final Interview

Those highest ranking candidates who successfully completed CPAT will be invited to participate in a final interview. Candidates will be re-ranked based on their final interview score. Selection for the next Firefighter Recruit class will be based on this revised final ranking.

Prior to the start of an Academy class, selected candidates must provide a Motor Vehicle History Report and pass a criminal background check, a Public Records Check, a drug screen as well as a comprehensive physical examination from the City Physician.
