City Partners to Make Streets Safer for Schoolchildren

The City of Tucson Bicycle & Pedestrian Program and Living Streets Alliance are helping children and parents discover that walking and biking can be a fun, everyday part of a healthy life. The alternatives to vehicles also reduce traffic congestion and pollution around schools, improve safety in school zones, and provide families and friends an opportunity to share time with each other and build connections in their community.

Planning Commission Meeting Rescheduled

The Aug. 19 meeting of the City of Tucson's Planning Commission has been moved to Sept. 16. Two public hearings are scheduled during that meeting - the Flexible Lot Design (FLD) draft text amendment and the Urban Agriculture draft text amendment. The citizen-comprised Planning Commission advises the Tucson City Council and staff on plans, policies, and standards affecting land use and development.

Broadway Boulevard - Camino Seco to Houghton Open House





The City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) invite the public to attend an Open House for Broadway Improvements from Camino Seco to Houghton Road.

Mermaids Unite Downtown

Tomorrow's the day mermaids, pirates, jellyfish, and other sea creatures will be washed ashore on downtown's pop-up beach on the MLK Lot at North Fifth Avenue at East Congress Street, and at Fourth Avenue’s Haggerty Plaza, 316 N. Fourth Ave. The "Return of the Mermaids" event begins with a mermaid arts market at 11 a.m. at 50 N. Fifth Ave. There will be music, dancing, and artists showcasing a variety of mermaid artwork and accessories.

Live Music Tomorrow on Streetcar

Ride the Sun Link streetcar and enjoy the KXCI Presents: Sun Link Summer in the City Concert Series, a live concert inside a streetcar. The series features concerts through the end of the month. The next concert will take place tomorrow night, featuring music from Laura and the Killed Men. Passengers can attend the concert by boarding the streetcar at the stop at Avenida del Convento and Congress (across from Mercado San Agustin) at 7 p.m.

Back to School Safety

With school back in session, you may see students riding the bus, biking, or walking to school each day. Safety requires caution on the part of the students and those driving near them. In this week's "No Bad Days With Barrett" on KGUN9, Capt. Barrett Baker gets help from kindergarteners at Desert Willow Elementary to explain how to make it to class safely.

Mayor and Council Votes to Streamline Redevelopment of Vacant Schools

The Tucson City Council last night approved a land development incentive package for shuttered schools in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). The incentives are designed to fast-track development by offering deferred building permit fees and expedited reviews of building plans. Eight schools remain closed and would qualify for the incentives.
