Tucson Police Department Holding Voluntary Fitness Assessment

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) Recruiting Unit is accepting registrations for a voluntary physical fitness orientation this Sunday. It will provide future applicants the opportunity to gauge their fitness level before testing for the position of Police Officer Recruit. Participants also will receive mentoring from the Recruiting Unit and physical training instructors.
Jaguar Spotted in Mountains South of Tucson

Just-released video footage shows a jaguar walking through the brush of the Santa Rita Mountains and climbing over rocks along a flowing stream. Conservation CATalyst and the Center for Biological Diversity released the 40-second video yesterday, saying the jaguar is the only known one of its kind living in the wild in the United States.
Tucson Police First Aid Kits Saving Lives

The Tucson Police Department is crediting its new Individual First Aid Kits (IFAKs) with reducing the number of deaths of crime victims and others in medical distress. Since the IFAKs were deployed in 2014, every officer can address traumatic injuries while a scene is still active, before emergency medical personnel can arrive. The practice has been very successful and has attracted the attention of law enforcement communities across the country.

Registration is underway for the spring City Softball League. Games will be played at various Tucson Parks and Recreation fields. The deadline to register is Feb. 19, and the season starts March 14.

A-10 'Warthog' Safe Until 2022

The Pentagon will delay until 2022 its plan to retire the A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack jet, a mainstay at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter made the announcement yesterday. Eventually, the A-10s will be replaced with the newer F-35s.
D-M supporters fear retiring the A-10s would make the base more vulnerable to future closure. D-M pumped an estimated $973 million into the local economy in 2014.
Greyhound Terminal Gets New Location

A new Greyhound bus terminal will be built on a now-vacant lot near East Broadway and South Euclid Avenue. Rio Nuevo says its buying the site for $575,000. The property will be located on East 12th Street, behind the OfficeMax store. The terminal will be on the alignment for Downtown Links, a project that will allow traffic to get to I-10 without going through downtown.
Mexican Consulate Building Dedicated by Dignitaries

State and local representatives and federal official from Mexico gathered in Tucson yesterday to dedicate the new offices of the Mexican Consulate at 3915 E. Broadway Blvd. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey was joined at the ceremony by Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Claudia Ruiz-Massieu, Sonora Gov. Claudia Pavlovich, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, and others.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection This Weekend

Do you have unused chemicals, oils, or pesticides sitting in your shed or garage? The City of Tucson is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection this Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon at the Eastside Service Center, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd.
Drop off at HHW is free for City of Tucson residents. There is a fee of $10 for each television and $2 for each monitor brought in without a computer.
Zoo Offers Play Days This Month

Nature play starts this Sunday at Reid Park Zoo, followed by the same format every Sunday in February. From 1-3 p.m., the Zoo will have a free-play area set up near the Conservation Learning Center for kids to dig, build, splash, and more. Sand pits, water tables, building blocks, and tools will be provided. Children just need to bring their curiosity and imagination.
Sixth Avenue Reopens Between Sixth Street and Seventh Street

SCHEDULED STREET CLOSURE FOR CRANE OPERATIONS CANCELLED
Sixth Avenue from Sixth Street to Seventh Street has reopened to two way travel following work yesterday to remove storm water from a utility trench just north of Seventh Street. Work crews from Century Link continue to relocate their existing facilities at this location as part of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation's Downtown Links Phase III project.
Gem Shows Underway in Tucson

The Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase is happening at more than 40 sites, and most shows are free and open to the public. The shows run until Feb. 14, culminating with the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show® opening on the 11th. That event packs the Tucson Convention Center for the final four days of shows, pulling in thousands of treasure hunters from around the world.
