Tucson Police Awarded Grant to Cut Backlog of Sexual Assault Kits

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) Crime Lab, DNA Unit will receive $1 million over two years to test up to 1,000 previously untested sexual assault kits. TPD has been selected as a recipient of the 2015 Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Elimination Grant Program to begin on Oct. 1. Sexual assault evidence kits, commonly known as “rape kits,” are collections of evidence taken during an examination conducted at a hospital or rape crisis center following a sexual assault.

Midtown Dog Licensing Event Saturday

The City of Tucson, Pima Animal Care Center (PACC), and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona are teaming up to kick off Tucson’s “Love Your Pup, License Up” campaign with a special licensing event tomorrow, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Late fees will be waived, but regular fees apply. Free rabies vaccinations will be available on site from 10 a.m.-noon (dogs must be at least 3 months old).

Tucson Pops Orchestra Presents Fall Concert Series at Reid Park

Tucson Parks and Recreation Department and the Tucson POPS Orchestra invite you to attend the fall concert series this month. The free “Music under the Stars™” series at the DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center in Reid Park begins Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13, 20 and 27. The concerts, under the direction of Maestro László Veres, will focus the spotlight on the many talents of the Tucson Pops Orchestra.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Tomorrow

Do you have unused chemicals, oils or pesticides sitting in your shed or garage? The City of Tucson is hosting its 2nd Saturday Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection tomorrow. The collection location is at Himmel Park, 1000 N. Tucson Blvd. from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Accepted materials include automotive fluids, rechargeable batteries from electronics equipment, toxic cleaning products, fluorescent lamps, paints, solvents, and lawn and garden products.

Southwest Gas work on 22nd Street

Beginning this month a contractor for Southwest Gas will begin work on a pipeline improvement project along 22nd Street between Sarnoff Drive to Gollob Road. Work is expected to take place from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; however extended hours may be necessary as the project moves forward. Work is set to begin on the southern side of 22nd Street at Oak Park Road and move west towards Sarnoff Drive. Work is expected to be completed in November 2015.

Tucson Police Officer Rescues Man From Oncoming Train

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) is recognizing one its officers for her bravery in saving the life of a 43-year-old man she found lying on the railroad tracks last month near West Speedway Boulevard and Interstate 10. On its Facebook page, TPD honored Officer Alexandra Rambaran for her bravery and demonstration of the TPD Values of Service Orientation, Leadership and Professionalism.

Watch Bats Tomorrow

Bat enthusiasts can learn more about the lives of Mexican free-tailed bats and watch hundreds of bats emerge from their daytime roosts under the Campbell Avenue Bridge over the Rillito River. Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation is offering the bat viewing tomorrow at sundown at 4200 N. City Tax Amnesty Program in Full Swing

The City of Tucson is offering the business community a Tax Amnesty Program. This rare opportunity allows Tucson business owners to submit delinquent sales tax or license fees without penalty and reduced interest on delinquent balances. This is also an opportunity for unlicensed Tucson businesses to get licensed without penalty.

The amnesty period began last Tuesday and will run through the end of next month. During the last Tax Amnesty Program in 2009, 598 businesses participated.

Voter-Approved Road Work Resumes on Portion of East 22nd Street

Work began today on asphalt repairs on 22nd Street, from Pantano Road to Sarnoff Drive, in preparation for the final paving on 22nd Street. The repairs are scheduled to be finished by this Friday. Crews from Southern Arizona Paving, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation, will work from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, and there will be 24-hour lane restrictions. At least one lane in each direction will be maintained during the work.
