On Sunday, January 10, 2016, crews from Sunland Asphalt, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin milling and paving operations on Campbell Avenue from Ft. Lowell Road to Glenn Street.

Construction is underway on the new AC Hotel by Marriott in Downtown Tucson at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The multi-story building will take approximately 18 months to complete. Daily traffic control set-ups will be necessary in order to construct this new building. Below is the vehicular travel restrictions associated with this construction. Please note that pedestrian and bicycle access is being maintained in and around road closures.

The City of Tucson recently received a rebate of more than $849,000 for its participation in the JP Morgan Purchasing Card (P-Card) program. The program allows the City to buy items through a credit card, instead of the traditional purchasing and payment process.
The City receives a percentage of total spending as a rebate at the end of the year. The rebate contributes to the City’s General Fund, which is used for public safety, parks, and other services.

Vice Mayor Karin Uhlich and Pima County Constable Bennett Bernal are partnering with Pima County Public Library to host a Shred-It service during the Freecycle™ Post-Holiday Swap at Woods Memorial Branch Library.
The events will take place this Saturday, 2-4 p.m., in the parking lot of the library, 3455 N. 1st Ave. Individuals may bring boxes of documents to be securely shredded onsite at no cost.

The Mayor and Tucson City Council voted yesterday to hire an outside pollster to survey Tucson residents about whether they would support a half-cent city sales tax increase. Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said the poll would cost $10,000-$20,000, but he said outside groups may be willing to pay the costs.
A half-cent sales tax increase would bring in about $50 million a year, but it must be approved by voters. The tax hike would bring the city rate to 2.5 percent, matching Oro Valley and Marana.

The Tucson Department of Transportation says it can deliver better lighting that saves energy and money without adding light pollution.
An energy audit conducted for the City by the vendor selling the lighting system says Tucson could save $180,000 a month on electrical costs and reduce overall lumens by 62 percent.
Unlike the current lighting system, the new lighting would be able to be dimmed or turned up as needed.
Any change would need to be approved by the Tucson City Council.

Starting Jan. 15, Sun Tran Fare Enforcement Officers will ride select bus routes to help discourage fare evasion and unwanted behavior on the buses. Officers can issue citations that could result in fines ranging from $100-$2,500, depending on the severity and number of offenses.
Adding the officers is meant to increase the safety of passengers and drivers, make sure all passengers pay their fares, and help keep buses on time when issues arise.

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer Recruit. Successful candidates from this testing period will be considered for any funded academy class(es) within the next six months. The earliest academy that will be filled from the list is July 2016, but that date may be adjusted if necessary.
The deadline to apply is Jan. 31.
