On Monday, January 4, 2016, crews from Sunland Asphalt, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin work to improve the pavement conditions on 22nd Street from Tucson Boulevard to Alvernon Way.

All City offices, except for emergency services, will be closed on the next two Fridays to celebrate Christmas and New Year's Day.
Due to the holidays, residential and commercial trash and recycling will not be collected on those Fridays. All City of Tucson residents and businesses with regular Friday collections will have their trash and recycling service on Saturdays during the holiday weeks. The Los Reales Landfill will be closed on both holidays.

Christmas is this Friday, so it's time to start thinking about what to do with your real tree after the holiday.
Starting Saturday, you can bring your tree (minus the decorations) to one of nine TreeCycle sites throughout the community. The annual program runs through Jan. 12 at sites in Tucson and Oro Valley.

The draft Design Concept Report (DCR) for the Broadway: Euclid to Country Club Improvement Project is available online for public review and comment. Comments will be accepted through this Wednesday.
The DCR provides information about the baseline alignment concept approved last June by the Mayor and Tucson City Council. It incorporates the results of the public involvement undertaken throughout the planning phase and will set general standards and criteria for further design and construction.

The inaugural NOVA® Home Loans Arizona Bowl is set for next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Arizona Stadium, but the pre-game celebration begins Monday with the free Downtown Block Party.
From 3-8 p.m., 5th Avenue between Toole Avenue and Congress Street will be the party place. There will be an outdoor music stage, street performers, sand volleyball, games, food, and school bands representing the participating football teams from the University of Nevada and Colorado State.

The Sun Link streetcar will transform into the Polar Express (or the Pueblo Express) tomorrow. Join Santa and Mrs. Claus along with their jolly elves to sing some classic Christmas carols.
Ring in the holiday season starting at 5 p.m. at the Mercado stop on Avenida del Convento, where kids and parents can make paper snowflakes to decorate the inside of the streetcar. The Polar Express will be leaving the station at 6 p.m. sharp with limited space available.

The Tucson Police Department's (TPD) Communication Division yesterday gave gifts to all 70 students of the nonprofit Imago Dei Middle School in Downtown Tucson. The tradition began five years ago.
Many of the students and families have limited means and the goal was to provide them with a happy holiday season.

If you have a fresh cut Christmas tree, or plan on buying one, the Tucson Fire Department is offering some tips on how to prevent a fire in your home. In the final edition No Bad Days with Barrett on KGUN9, Capt. Barrett Baker says almost half of all Christmas tree fires are related to electrical problems. A dry tree also can cause problems.

The 21st annual Downtown Parade of Lights will take place this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and will last about two hours. The parade is expected to have approximately 75 different entries with 1,500 participants.
Before the parade begins, people can enjoy a festival with games, music, food, live entertainment, and more at Armory Park at 4 p.m. Mayor Jonathan Rothschild will light the Christmas tree at 5:45.

Reid Park Zoo's annual display of Christmas lights will help put you in the holiday spirit, with jingle bells, twinkling lights, falling snow, and Santa. Light displays, animal-themed light sculptures, and thousands of sparkling bulbs are part of the Zoo Lights holiday tradition.
Camel and carousel rides are open during the event for an additional fee. Free cookies are provided each night, and hot cocoa is available for $1.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans generate 25 percent more trash than other times of the year.
Many items used during the holidays can be recycled, including greeting cards, wrapping paper, cardboard, glass and metal food containers, and some packing materials. Exceptions include tissue paper, tinsel, ornaments, styrofoam blocks or peanuts, paper towels, napkins, plates, cups, and anything with food residue.
