City of Tucson Tax Workshop This Week

Learn your rights and responsibilities for Transaction Privilege (Sales) Taxation by attending the Tax and License Workshop sponsored by the City of Tucson Finance Department. The contracting workshop will be from 10:30 a.m.-noon Thursday at the Murphy-Wilmot Library, 530 N. Wilmot Road.

Questions will be answered and written materials will be available. Samples of sales tax records, worksheets, and monthly returns will be explained. You should bring a calculator and a pencil to the free workshop.

UA Downtown Lecture Series Continues This Week

The University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Science's annual Downtown Lecture Series continues tomorrow. The theme of this year's series focuses on immortality. The latest lecture features Jerrold Hogle speaking about "The Dark Immortality of the Vampire." His lecture runs from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Fox Tucson Theatre. Overflow seating with a video stream will be available at Hotel Congress and Playground Bar and Lounge.

Road Recovery Fog Seal Program Resumes This Week

Several streets will undergo pavement preservation beginning today through next Tuesday. The work is part of the five-year, $100 million Road Recovery bond program that City voters approved in 2012. Fog Sealing is the application of a thin layer of asphalt emulsion that helps cover small roadway imperfections, cracks, or other small voids and seals the existing asphalt to preserve the roadway.

Crews from Southern Arizona Paving and Construction Co, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), are continuing a fog seal program associated with the voter-approved $100 million, five-year street bond program – Road Recovery. 

To minimize the impact on the traveling public, crews will work from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The dates and locations where the next roadway improvements will take place are:

Police Chief Finalists Will Be Interviewed This Week

The Police Chief Appointment Advisory Committee will interview the four finalists for the position of police chief at a public meeting this Thursday at 8 a.m. in the Mayor and Council Chambers at City Hall, 255 W. Alameda. A competitive interview process was used to select the finalists from the recommended applicant pool. The finalists are Malik Aziz, Larry Esquivel, Rick Gregory, and Christopher Magnus.

Grant Road Improvement Project Open House Tomorrow

The public is invited to attend the Grant Road Improvement Project open house, hosted by the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). The gathering will take place tomorrow, 5:30-7 p.m., at the Tucson Association of Realtors, 2445 N. Tucson Blvd. There will be a brief presentation by the project team at 5:45 p.m.

The public is invited to attend a Grant Road Improvement Project open house hosted by the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).

The open house will take place on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Tucson Association of Realtors, 2445 N. Tucson Blvd. There will be a brief presentation by the project team at 5:45 p.m.

Boo Bash Tomorrow at Lincoln Park

The annual Halloween Boo Bash is a fun-filled night with tricks, treats, entertainment, haunted hayride, storytelling, food, and more. Some of the activities include a costume contest, carnival games, and storytelling. The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department and Pima Community College East Campus are hosting tomorrow's event from 4-7 p.m. at Lincoln Park, 4325 S. Pantano Road. Admission is free.

Open House Monday for Church Avenue Street Project

The Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) is considering changes to Church Avenue and it wants to hear public comments about the proposed redesign. Potential improvements to Church, from St. Marys Road to Cushing Street, include a two-way center turn lane for safety, a continuous bicycle facility, additional parking, and enhanced pedestrian crossings. The open house for the plan will be held Monday, 5:30-7 p.m., in the basement of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N.

Celebrate Park Improvements at Mission Manor Park

A Community Development Block Grant of $458,000 funded recent improvements to Mission Manor Park, 6100 S. 12th Ave. The park has a new playground and swings, irrigation improvements, and a new ramada with lighting, outlets, and tables with benches. All improvements are ADA accessible. Other improvements include the installation of a new state-of-the-art energy efficient lighting system and a remotely-controlled scoreboard installed on baseball field one.
