Lion Dies at Reid Park Zoo

One of the four lion cubs born at Reid Park Zoo in December 2013 died this week from issues related to valley fever and kidney disease. The University of Arizona, in partnership with Zoo veterinarians, conducted a full necropsy, which revealed that Bakko had significant inflammation and ulceration throughout his stomach. Further results are pending tissue sample tests.
Ride Streetcar to UA Football Game Tomorrow

University of Arizona football fans can ride the Sun Link streetcar to the game. Prior to the 1 p.m. Family Weekend game against the Oregon State Beavers, fans can experience the dining, entertainment, and retail opportunities at Main Gate Square, Fourth Avenue, Downtown Tucson, and the Mercado District, and then board the streetcar to the UA from any one of the 23 stops along the 3.9-mile route. Once on campus, Arizona Stadium is a short walk from the Second Street and Cherry Avenue stop.
2nd Saturdays Downtown This Weekend

Visit Downtown Tucson tomorrow for 2nd Saturdays Downtown and enjoy live music, movies, street performers, restaurants, street vendors, and gallery shows. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the main stage at Scott Avenue and Congress Street features musical performances. You can use the Sun Link streetcar to move easily through the downtown area.
Parking Plentiful for Weekend Events

If you plan to attend the UA football game, 2nd Saturdays Downtown, Tucson Meet Yourself, Bear Down Friday, or any other events this weekend along the Sun Link streetcar route, you can park in one of the City of Tucson parking garages. In all, there are 11,000 parking spaces along the streetcar's nearly 4-mile route. Visit Park Tucson for detailed information.
Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue Intersection Closure Starts Sunday

As part of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation's Downtown Links Phase III project, Century Link is continuing work to relocate existing facilities within the project limits. From Sunday through Thursday, 6 p.m.-5 a.m., the Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue intersection will be closed to traffic in all directions. The intersection closure is in place each night to allow work crews to install underground conduit in the middle of the intersection. Nearby businesses will be open and accessible.

Tucson Meet Yourself Begins Tomorrow

Get ready for lots of food, entertainment and culture in Downtown Tucson this weekend at Tucson Meet Yourself. The annual celebration recognizes traditional arts of Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico and their diverse ethnic and folk communities. The three-day event begins tomorrow at 11 a.m., featuring hundreds of artisans, home cooks, dancers, musicians, and special exhibits that celebrate diversity.

Catch the University of Arizona spirit tomorrow (and every Friday before home football games), when Main Gate Square hosts Bear Down Friday from 5-7 p.m. A pep rally begins at 6 p.m. and features the Pride of Arizona marching band, Wilbur and Wilma, UA cheerleaders, the pom squad, and twirlers. Various UA coaches make guest appearances at each pep rally.
Residential Tower May Be Built Downtown

Tucson's tallest building could get a twin. Known simply by its address, One South Church, the building has had several names and owners since it was first built in 1986 as the United Bank Tower and ended its naming run in 2011 as the Unisource Energy Tower.
Now, the building is locally-owned, and the developers want to renovate the current structure and build a second tower on an adjacent, vacant lot. Developers say the residential tower could be as tall as 330 feet.
City Initiative to Restore Neon Signs

Recognizing the value of local neon signs, the City's Historic Preservation Office has allocated $125,000 to restore some of these iconic landmarks.
To be eligible for the program, owners of blighted signs apply for Historic Landmark Sign designation, agree to keep the sign up for at least 10 years and pay 25 percent of repair costs. The Hacienda Motel (two signs), Riviera Motor Lodge, and Casa Linda Motel signs currently are being restored under the program.
Artists Sought for Dumpster Murals

A Tucson arts group is seeking artists to paint murals on dumpsters at local businesses. In an effort to curb graffiti, the Tucson Arts Brigade is working with the City of Tucson's Environmental Services department to put murals on five dumpsters. The pilot project will cost about $5,000.
An Eventful Weekend Downtown - Travel Information

Downtown Tucson will be the host of several exciting events this weekend. Below is a list of the major events and associated motor vehicle travel restrictions. Please note that pedestrian and bicycle access is being maintained in and around road closures. Businesses, parking garages and parking lots are open and accessible. There are over 15,000 available parking spaces in the Downtown Tucson.
Some of these events will require the closure of downtown streets; however, every effort has been made to coordinate timing to provide optimum access to downtown.
D-M Hosts Units for Training in October

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. – Multiple units from across the country will be visiting Davis-Monthan throughout the month of October for training.
A KC-130J Harvest Hawk will train at D-M from October 16-23. The KC-130J is from the 4-160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.
A KC-135 from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing at McConnell AFB, KS, will train here October 5-9 alongside D-M A-10s.
