The Tucson Fire Department (TFD) recently was awarded a $46,000 federal grant to purchase safety equipment necessary to protect personnel during Rescue Task Force (RTF) deployment situations. The equipment will give added protection to TFD personnel so they can safely carry out their tasks on scene.

The next Shred-It service will take place Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, 601 E. Fort Lowell Road, from 8-11 a.m. Individuals may bring two boxes of documents to be shredded on site. A $5 donation is suggested to benefit Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse and Lend A Hand Senior Assistance. The Shred-It event is hosted by Vice Mayor Karin Uhlich and Pima County Constable Bennett Bernal.

Catch the University of Arizona spirit tomorrow (and every Friday before home football games), when Main Gate Square hosts Bear Down Friday from 5-7 p.m. A pep rally begins at 6 p.m. and features the Pride of Arizona marching band, Wilbur and Wilma, UA cheerleaders, the pom squad, and twirlers. Various UA coaches make guest appearances at each pep rally.

Andrew Grams returns to the Tucson Symphony Orchestra to conduct the opening program of the 2015-16 Mrs. Dorothy Dyer Vanek Classic Series tomorrow at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave.

Reid Park Zoo’s tapir calf has started taking short excursions into his habitat, closely supervised by zookeepers and his mom. His appearances will be brief and sporadic for the next week or so. The calf was born at the end of August.

University of Arizona football fans can ride the Sun Link streetcar to the games. Prior to the 5:22 p.m. game against the UCLA Bruins (and ESPN's College GameDay from 6-9 a.m.), fans can experience the dining, entertainment, and retail opportunities at Main Gate Square, Fourth Avenue, Downtown Tucson, and the Mercado District, and then board the streetcar to the UA from any one of the 23 stops along the 3.9-mile route. Once on campus, Arizona Stadium is a short walk from the Second Street and Cherry Avenue stop.

The irrigation work is scheduled to be finished by this Friday.

As part of the Campbell Avenue Streetscape Enhancement Project, crews from Pima Paving, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation, will begin installing underground irrigation lines across Campbell Avenue between Grant Road and Glenn Street.
The irrigation work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 and be complete by Friday, September 25, 2015. During these three nights, travel on Campbell Avenue between Grant Road and Glenn Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department was recognized again for excellence in the field of parks and recreation management by achieving national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department originally was accredited by CAPRA in October 2010. As a requirement of agency accreditation, Parks and Recreation must go through a review process every five years.
