Bus Strike Over: Agreement Reached Between Sun Tran and Teamsters

Sun Tran and Teamsters Local 104 finalized a new contract last night, after union members voted to ratify the agreement reached early yesterday. Regular passenger service resumed this morning. Sun Tran passengers with an active 30-Day Pass, 30-Day Express Pass, or 30-Day Economy Pass on a SunGO Card or SunGO ID & Card during the work stoppage automatically will receive 42 days on the pass to replace the days lost during the strike, but the extra days could take a few weeks to load.

Open Houses Continue for Tucson Parks and Recreation

The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department held it first community-wide open house last night to gather public input on how it can best deliver recreation and leisure opportunities. The draft five-year master plan anticipates future needs and outlines the actions necessary to deliver high-quality recreation facilities, programs, and services to the Tucson area. Public and stakeholder input is essential and critical to the success of the master plan. Tucson Police Department Holding Voluntary Fitness Assessment

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) Recruiting Unit is accepting registrations for a voluntary physical fitness orientation this Saturday. It will provide future applicants the opportunity to gauge their fitness level before testing for the position of Police Officer Recruit. Participants will also receive mentoring from the Recruiting Unit and physical training instructors. The fitness orientation is not part of the actual hiring process.

Street Bonds Road Recovery Fog Seal Program

On Monday, September 21, 2015, crews from Southern Arizona Paving and Construction Co, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin a fog seal program associated with the voter-approved $100 million, five-year street bond program – Road Recovery. 

To minimize the impact on the traveling public, crews will work from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The dates and locations where the first two roadway improvements will take place are:

Neighborhood Leadership Institute Meeting This Weekend

Pima County’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Program invites neighborhood leaders and residents to attend its Neighborhood Leadership Institute this Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Pima County Housing Center, 801 W. Final Two Public Forums Set for January 8th Memorial

Two more public forums are scheduled for community input into the proposed January 8th Memorial design concept at El Presidio Park downtown. Los Angeles-based Chee Salette Architecture Office (CSAO) was chosen to design a master plan for the park and memorial. A final design could be completed in January, followed by a development and construction stage that could start next year. The public meetings are scheduled for Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at Tucson Fire Department Headquarters (300 S. Fire Central Place) and Nov. 7 at 9:30 a.m.

Women in Law Enforcement Career Event This Week

Registration is underway for Friday's Women in Law Enforcement event, hosted by the Tucson Police Department's (TPD) Recruiting Unit. Female TPD employees will discuss career paths and opportunities for women in law enforcement and related fields. The forum will be held Friday night (check-in starts at 6:30) at the Westside Police Substation, 1310 W. Miracle Mile.

Tucson 12 Wins National Awards

Tucson 12 won three awards last week, as the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) honored the winners of the 30th Annual Government Programming Awards in San Diego. The City's television station won Second Place awards for "Zoo News - Predator/Prey Relationships" and "Tucson City News in Review." Tucson 12 also took Third Place for "Camp Fury." September is National Preparedness Month

This month marks the 12th annual National Preparedness Month from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As part of the month, Tucson officials are urging you to be prepared for an emergency, such as a multi-day power outage or an interruption in utilities. Be Prepared Tucson advises all residents to create a 72-hour emergency kit. Each member of your family, including pets, should have a kit.

The City of Tucson's Small Business Assistance Line, (520) 837-4100, is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Help is available in both English and Spanish. Staff members from the City Manager's Office of Economic Initiatives answer the calls. The Small Business Assistance Line is one of a number of City initiatives to make the City of Tucson more business-friendly, along with 21 business incentives, streamlined permit processes, and more.

PLANNING COMMISSION TO HEAR ABOUT URBAN AGRICULTURE TOMORROW - The Planning Commission tomorrow will consider whether to send a draft text amendment recommendation to Mayor and Council relating to urban agriculture. The City of Tucson has been working with the community to develop a proposal which would, among other things, allow people to grow their own food and raise food-producing animals, such as chickens, miniature goats, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Before deciding to move forward with a proposal, the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m.
