Enjoy a Movie in the Park

Are you looking for some family-friendly entertainment on a Friday night? Movies in the Park, a Tucson summer staple since 2003, returns tomorrow to Reid Park with a free showing of How to Train Your Dragon 2 at dusk.

Residents are invited to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy a free movie every other Friday at the DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, 900 S. Randolph Way. Pre-movie events begin at 5:30 p.m. with live music, jumping castles, balloon animals, and arts and crafts exhibits. Popcorn, soda, and food truck vendors also will be available for an additional charge.

Tucson Fire Crews Respond to Swift Water Incident During Yesterday's Storm

Tucson Fire Department (TFD) units responded to a swift water rescue call yesterday near the intersection of South Elizabeth Drive and West Lincoln Street (near I-19 and Ajo Way) after an SUV was swept downstream and flipped over with two occupants still inside. TFD units arrived on scene and immediately set up for swift water rescue operations, including having several units respond further down the wash for a possible rescue downstream.

City of Tucson Holds Workshop on License and Sales Tax Reporting

Learn your rights and responsibilities for Transaction Privilege (sales) Taxation by attending a Tax and License Workshop sponsored by the City of Tucson Finance Department. Questions will be answered, and written materials will be available. Samples of sales tax records, worksheets, and monthly returns will be explained. You should bring a calculator and a pencil. A workshop for retail and contracting questions will be held tomorrow, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the Westside Police Service Center, 1310 W. Miracle Mile.

Summer Movies Continue at La Placita Village Downtown

Cinema La Placita hosts movies in an outdoor setting every Thursday night at 7:30 through August (weather permitting). Hundreds of Tucsonans enjoy the summer evenings with a different movie each week for $3 per person (includes all-you-can-eat popcorn). Tomorrow's movie is The Odd Couple (1968), starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. La Placita Village is located at 110 S. Church Ave., on the southwest corner of Broadway and Church in Downtown Tucson.

Fall Slowpitch Softball Registration Next Week

The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the Fall 2015 Softball Leagues. Walk-in registration begins Monday at Randolph Regional Center (one day only at this location), 200 S. Alvernon Way. Beginning Tuesday, you can register in person from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 19 at the Clements Center, 8155 E. Poinciana Dr. The season begins Aug. 31.

Volunteers Needed to Transport Seniors

The Independent Transportation Network (ITN) is seeking volunteers to provide transportation for people (mostly over 65) who can no longer drive, either because of vision impairment or other reasons. Driving usually entails trips to doctors, dentists, medical facilities, hair salons, grocery shopping, etc. Community organizations such as churches, assisted living facilities, and health care providers may contract with ITN to provide transportation services for their members. TFD responds to swift water incident involving car swept downstream

Tucson Fire units responded to a swift water call near the intersection of S. Elizabeth Drive and W. Lincoln Street after an SUV was swept downstream and flipped over with two occupants still inside.  Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting the vehicle being washed away, with some reports stating that two adults and two kids were swept away.  A swift water response was immediately dispatched.  The car entered a flooded wash on S.16th Avenue when it was swept downstream.  The vehicle flipped over and came to a rest near S.

22nd Street - Kolb Road to Sarnoff Drive Resurfacing Project: Schedule Update

Crews from Southern Arizona Paving, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), continue work to improve pavement conditions on 22nd Street between Kolb Road and Sarnoff Drive. 

Crews are currently repaving 22nd Street between Kolb Road and Pantano Road from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The repaving work   on this section of 22nd Street is scheduled to be complete on Sunday, August 2, 2015. No paving work will take place on Friday, July 31, 2015 and Saturday, August 1, 2015.
