The City of Tucson will open its court building this Saturday, giving people a weekend day to clear up outstanding warrants. A courtroom will be available at Tucson City Court, 103 East Alameda, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individuals with warrants may come to the court starting at 8 a.m. on a walk-in basis and see a judge regarding their warrant.

People for Bikes ranks Tucson No. 1 when it comes to casual, utilitarian bicycle trips around town. The website recognition comes after an eight-month search for the best city for "everyday biking," a term coined by readers of the website for bicycling suppliers, retailers, and bike enthusiasts.

Reid Park Zoo tomorrow opens it annual display of Christmas lights. Zoo Lights will help put you in the holiday spirit, with jingle bells, twinkling lights, falling snow, and Santa. Light displays, animal-themed light sculptures, and thousands of sparkling bulbs are part of the annual holiday tradition.

Perhaps you've seen new signs at some crosswalks that remind motorists to yield to pedestrians. The signs can be placed at marked crosswalks on roadways with speed limits of 25 mph or less. Most of the signs are in the downtown area, but they can be placed on qualifying roadways throughout Tucson by special request.
Do you know of a crosswalk that would benefit from a sign? Individuals, businesses, or organizations can "adopt" a crosswalk sign. By adopting the sign, the adopter agrees to pay $272.50 to have the sign built and placed at the crosswalk of their choice.

ZoomTucson is an interactive mapping site that allows citizens to find government information and services, such as political representatives, trash and recycling collection schedules, zoning, and school boundaries. The City of Tucson soon could send people convicted of misdemeanors to Santa Cruz County to serve their sentences. The two jurisdictions are working on an agreement that would send inmates with sentences of 10 days or more to Nogales, where the cost of housing inmates is less than at the Pima County Jail.

Inmates at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence recently heard from Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild about successful ways to reintegrate into the population when they're released. The mayor was the only one of more than 30 elected officials to accept a prisoner's invitation to speak at Monday's event.

Crews from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation’s Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division are repairing potholes on Starr Pass Boulevard from La Cholla Boulevard to Mission Road.
The work began this morning and will continue through this Friday. Work hours will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Because sections of the roadway are one lane in each direction, flaggers will direct travel through the work zone. The speed limit in the area will be reduced to 15 miles per hour.

The Tucson Police Department's (TPD) mentoring program began about two years ago in the Operations Division Downtown to connect experienced officers with newer ones to share experiences and insights about the job.
They attend meetings of the Citizen Police Advisory Review Board (CPARB) and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee, as well as spending time with detectives, specialty units, and the force commander. The meetings are based on individual interests and career goals.

Starting tonight at 8 o'clock, the eastbound curb lane on Sixth Street and the northbound curb lane on Sixth Avenue will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday. As part of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation's Downtown Links Phase III project, Century Link is continuing work to relocate existing facilities within project limits. The closures will allow crews to conduct underground utility work in manholes.

With the holiday shopping season underway, the Tucson Police Department's (TPD) Financial Crimes Unit is offering some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
Tips include carrying only the credit cards or checks you will need, keeping visual contact with your credit card when making a purchase, and making sure the receipt you sign matches the total of your purchase. You should also hold onto your receipts and compare them with your monthly statements. If you bank online, check your account activity frequently to make sure there aren't any fraudulent charges.

City of Tucson Parks and Recreation offers discounts that allow low-income residents to pay a 50 percent discounted fee for KIDCO, Jr. Leadership, In-Betweener's, Learn-to-Swim, and therapeutic programs. There also is a 25 percent discount for annual/quarterly passes at recreation centers and for a Senior Activity Card.

Living Streets Alliance is again partnering with the City of Tucson Bicycle & Pedestrian Program and the Pima Association of Governments to give away bike lights to people without them. Not only do bike lights improve visibility for both cyclists and others on the street – it's the law that bicyclists have them.
