Volunteers are needed for Saturday's Beat Back Buffelgrass Day. The goal is to help slow the spread of the non-native weed, which poses a severe fire hazard and a deadly threat to native vegetation.
Organizers of the event, hosted by the Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination Center, will guide volunteers in removing buffelgrass from neighborhoods, roads, washes, and schools.

Last week's "Stuff the Bus" food drive collected nearly 26,000 pounds of food for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.
Donors brought items such as canned soups, boxed cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned meats, and even cash. The event, which took place at an east side apartment complex, was sponsored by Sun Tran, KGUN 9 News, and HSL Properties.

OPTICAL VEHICLE DETECTION CAMERA INSTALLATION
VARIOUS INTERSECTIONS
On Monday, January 25, 2016, Contractor’s West, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin installing Optical Vehicle Detection (OVD) cameras at 12 various signalized intersections within the City of Tucson. Work hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The traveling public can anticipate lane restrictions between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The City of Tucson is hosting the second of three public meetings this month to allow the community and business leaders to discuss a proposal to require all businesses in city limits to offer sick time to their employees.
The Earned Sick & Safe Time meeting runs tomorrow from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Ward 6 Council Office, 3202 E. 1st St. The final meeting will be Jan. 28 at the Ward 2 Council Office, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd.

Chris Magnus spent his first day yesterday as chief of the Tucson Police Department (TPD) meeting staff and speaking with reporters.
The former police chief of Richmond, California is booked with meetings in his early days at TPD, but says he plans to get out and meet his command staff, officers, and the community to learn more about Tucson. Once he learns about the department’s strengths, resources and challenges, Magnus says he will be in a stronger position to set priorities, establish goals, and address needs.

Living Streets Alliance is again partnering with the City of Tucson Bicycle & Pedestrian Program and the Pima Association of Governments to give away bike lights to people without them. Not only do bike lights improve visibility for both cyclists and others on the street – it's the law that bicyclists have them.

Saturday's workshop (10 a.m.-noon) will help you learn why energy conservation matters, while giving you the tools to save energy in your home. The free event begins with a behind-the-scenes animal visit to learn how our actions affect wildlife around the world. After that, TEP staff will show you free and low-cost energy efficiency measures you can use at home.
All adult workshop participants will receive a free kit containing $50 worth of devices to increase home energy efficiency, including CFL bulbs, a smart power strip, weather stripping, and more from TEP.

The 1623 First Folio, assembled seven years after William Shakespeare's death, includes 36 of his plays, of which 18 never had been published. This year, the Folger Shakespeare Library is sending a First Folio to every state in the country, and the University of Arizona was chosen through a competitive selection process to be the host site for Arizona.
From Feb. 15 through March 15, you can view the book at the Arizona State Museum and participate in many events celebrating the occasion.

Following a national recruitment and competitive selection process, City Manager Michael Ortega chose Timothy Thomure as the next director of Tucson Water, effective Feb. 15.
Thomure is a water professional with 21 years of experience in the public sector, private industry, and consulting. He comes to the City from HDR Engineering, Inc., where he has worked since 2007 as an area water operations manager and water reuse practice lead.

The Mayor and Tucson City Council tomorrow night will hold a public hearing prior to deciding whether to amend the Major Streets and Routes Plan (MS&R Plan) to include the Baseline Alignment Concept for the Broadway: Euclid to Country Club Improvement Project. The Baseline Alignment Concept unanimously was approved by the Mayor and Council last June.

Real estate brokers say 2016 should be a busy year for commercial development. That's because deals were reached last year on nearly 1 million square feet of space for stores larger than 10,000 square feet.
The largest building under construction is the 100,000-square-foot Fry’s Food & Drug store on West Valencia Road near Midvale Park Road, according to data from the 2015 year-end Big Box Retail Report.
