The City of Tucson is holding the first of three public meetings this month to allow the community and business leaders to discuss a proposal to require all businesses in city limits to offer sick time to their employees. The Earned Sick & Safe Time Stakeholder Meeting runs tonight from 6-7:30 at the Ward 5 Council Office, 4300 S. Park Ave.

Factors taken into consideration included affordable housing in good school districts, low unemployment rates, weather, arts and culture, entertainment, parks, childcare costs, and more.

There's snow on the grounds of Reid Park Zoo today. The white stuff didn't actually fall at the Zoo, but it was trucked in from Mt. Lemmon for the animals and zoogoers to enjoy.

The HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival begins this week, kicking off nearly two weeks of jazz at Downtown Tucson venues and surrounding areas, through Jan. 24.
This year's festival opens Thursday at the Fox Tucson Theatre with NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Jimmy Heath performing his arrangements with the Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Band.
Other events include the free Downtown Jazz Fiesta on Martin Luther King Day, New Orleans-style jazz, piano jazz, and more.

The goal of the instruction is to increase participation in recycling in Tucson (Do More Blue) and reduce contamination in the blue barrels.

Four current and retired firefighters from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) hope to compete against other firefighters across the country for an opportunity to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis during the Fire Department Instructor Conference in April.
Known as The Turnouts, the TFD band is encouraging people to watch its video (below) and cast a vote online.

The Tucson Police Department (TPD) is reporting a recent increase in vehicle break-ins throughout the city. To help combat that problem, TPD has produced a video on how you can lessen your chances of becoming a victim of auto theft.

The Earned Sick & Safe Time Stakeholder Meetings will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. at different locations. The first is scheduled for this Wednesday at the Ward 5 Council Office, 4300 S. Park Ave. The other two meetings will be Jan. 21 at the Ward 6 Office, 3202 E. 1st St., and Jan. 28 at the Ward 2 Office, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd.

Construction on the new AC Hotel by Marriott in Downtown Tucson at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Broadway Boulevard will cause vehicular restrictions, but pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained. Starting today, and lasting through approximately May 2017, the left lane of Broadway will be closed between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.
During the closure, all vehicles in the left lane of Broadway will be required to turn left onto northbound Sixth Avenue. Through traffic should use the right lane of Broadway approaching Sixth Avenue.

Starting tomorrow, through the middle of next month, Pima County and its contractor will complete the installation of the temporary flow management piping (FMP) along River Road between Alvernon Way and Hacienda Del Sol.
The piping will be installed in Pima County right-of-way along the north side of River Road between Alvernon Way and Camino Kino. Once the flow management system is installed, it will remain in place until the sewer rehabilitation is complete.

Zoo and aquarium leaders from across the country will meet this week at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson for the annual Directors’ Policy Conference. The event is held for Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited leaders to network, discuss policy, and evaluate emerging trends.
This year’s conference is expected to attract more than 200 zoo and aquarium directors, senior leaders, and guests to Tucson.
To accommodate the welcoming event tomorrow afternoon, Reid Park Zoo will close at 1 p.m.

The 14th season of American Idol premiered last week with a new batch of contestants trying to become famous. In preparation for the season, the Fox television show came to Tucson last June to hold auditions.
In the video below, Tucson 12 caught up with some of the singer wannabes, and some even performed for the camera.
