Sun Tran to Distribute SunGO Cards in Advance of Transfer Policy Change

The Mayor and Tucson City Council recently voted to eliminate paper transfers on Sun Tran buses and incorporate an unrestricted two-hour transfer period in any direction on the SunGO Card and SunGO ID & Card. Effective Sept. 1, the change is meant to simplify the transfer policy, reduce costs, and provide an added benefit to passengers.

Pima Council on Aging Founder Dies

Longtime community activist Marian Lupu died at her Tucson home yesterday at the age of 91. The advocate for the aging founded the Pima Council on Aging and was its director for 40 years, retiring about ten years ago. She most recently was a volunteer with Dancing in the Streets Arizona, founded by her daughter and son-in-law, Soleste Lupu and Joseph Rodgers.

Details of a memorial service have not been released yet.

Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair: Call for Vendors

Applications are available for artists who wish to participate in the Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, Nov. 26-27. The event has been held for more than two decades, attracting vendors from all over the Southwest.

The Tucson Parks and Recreation department is seeking artists, crafters, photographers, painters, potters, jewelers, and more to sell their original artwork. All items must be handmade and are subject to approval.

Library Hours Changing at Three Branches

After market studies and monthly activity measures, the Pima County Public Library says its changing hours at three of its branches, effective Sept. 12.

The Joel D. Valdez Main Library will close at 6 p.m. Monday-Wednesday. All other hours will remain the same.

The Dewhirst-Catalina Library will shift its Tuesday hours from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. to 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

The Sahuarita Library will close on Saturdays, but will now be open on Mondays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Stone Avenue Closure - Helen Street to First Street

To expedite the completion of the reconstruction of the Speedway Boulevard and Stone Avenue intersection, Stone Avenue will be closed to travel from Helen Street to First Street beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2016.

Upon closing Stone Avenue, southbound motorists will be detoured east on Helen Street, south on Sixth Avenue through Speedway Boulevard, west on First Street to Stone Avenue. Northbound motorists will be detoured east on First Street, north on Sixth Avenue through Speedway Boulevard and west on Helen Street to Stone Avenue.

Two City Departments Presented Statewide Public Works Awards

Tucson Water’s Administrator of Strategic Initiatives, Jeff B. Biggs, received the 2016 Outstanding Public Works Employee Award during the Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association's statewide conference yesterday at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort. The award recognizes Biggs’ achievements, including 35 years of work in various water-related capacities.

Pokémon GO Safari Nights at Reid Park Zoo This Weekend

Come and catch Pokémon at Reid Park Zoo tomorrow, 7-10 p.m. Trainers can capture Pokémon, meet other players, and learn tips and tricks from local Pokémon GO pros. Meanwhile, guests can enjoy music, face painting, caricatures, and more. Lures will be activated in the Pokémon GO app at several different locations in the Zoo approximately every 30 minutes.
