Comcast officially signed the lease on the former American Home Furnishings building near Tucson Mall to house the media company's new call center, IT, and Spanish-language social media operations. The company says it plans to add 1,125 jobs in May. Renovation of the facility is expected to start immediately.

Visit Expedition Tanzania this Sunday for an early World Elephant Day celebration at Reid Park Zoo. From 8:30-10:30 a.m., the Zoo will host elephant-themed activities and presentations. The elephants will receive special treats and take part in training sessions viewable by guests. Activities are free with regular Zoo admission. Also, you can celebrate elephants again on Wednesday, Aug.

The City of Tucson will open its court building on Saturday, giving people a weekend day to clear up outstanding warrants. There will be two courtrooms available at Tucson City Court, 103 East Alameda, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal of Warrant Day is to resolve the warrant and possibly close cases in warrant status. If you want to see if you have a warrant, you can check online.

As Sun Tran officials and representatives of Teamsters Local 104 continue to negotiate a new contract, the current contract extension is set to expire at 11:59 tonight. In the event of a work stoppage, Sun Tran will offer limited weekday service from approximately 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Routes 3, 8, 11, 16, and 18. Reid Park Zoo is hosting a special breakfast event on Aug. 20 at 7 a.m. to celebrate Nandi's first birthday, and tickets to the private party sold out fast. If you still want to watch Nandi celebrate her birthday and couldn't get tickets on time, there will be a public party on Aug. 22, beginning at 8 a.m. Watch Nandi get more birthday treats, and you can sign a card, sing Happy Birthday, and chat with Zoo staff about Nandi’s first year. Activities are free with regular admission.

Cinema La Placita hosts movies in an outdoor setting every Thursday night at 7:30 through the end of this month (weather permitting). Hundreds of Tucsonans enjoy the summer evenings with a different movie each week for $3 per person (includes all-you-can-eat popcorn). An apartment fire in the 2200 block of North Ralph Avenue (near Grant Road and Columbus Boulevard) displaced two residents yesterday after a fire started on the balcony due to an improperly discarded cigarette. Two dogs that lived in the apartment were taken out by firefighters and are okay. The two apartment residents, a male and female, weren't home at the time of the fire.

A camel at Reid Park Zoo was diagnosed Monday with a bacterial infection (Corneybacterium pseduotuberculosis). In the interest of extreme caution, to prevent any cross contamination with the Zoo’s animals, the camel ride operation has been suspended for the time being. The camel is being treated aggressively with antibiotics, and all four camels will be kept under strict quarantine. The camels, owned by a private contractor, arrived in Tucson in November 2014.

The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department wants to know how it can improve recreation and leisure opportunities for all of its users. The department is in the process of gathering information that will result in a vibrant, new five-year master plan that anticipates future needs and outlines the actions necessary to deliver high-quality recreation facilities, programs, and services to the Tucson area. Public and stakeholder input is essential and critical to the success of the master plan.

Tucson's summer thunderstorms can turn animal exhibits into mud pits in just a few minutes, but that's not always bad. Lions aren't generally known for their love of water, but this past weekend's break in their afternoon routine proved irresistible for the playful young lions at Reid Park Zoo.

The deadline to submit arguments about November's ballot propositions is this Wednesday. There will be three Charter change questions on the Nov. 3 General Election ballot, along with a citizen's initiative to ban red light cameras in the City of Tucson. Arguments will be included in the sample ballot/publicity pamphlet for the election. That pamphlet will be mailed to each household with a registered voter in the City.
