Desert Nights Downtown Lights presents the Friday Food, Fun and Flix holiday movie series this Friday, Dec. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. at Jácome Plaza (northwest corner of Stone Avenue and Pennington Street). The family-friendly film is “Elf,” and admission is free. Popcorn and hot cocoa will be available for sale.

Tucson Parks and Recreation offers a program for youth 5-11 years old during winter break, Dec. 23-Jan. 3, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The cost is $40 for city residents and $50 for non-residents. Supervised activities include games, sports, social interaction, dance, art projects, and nutrition-based learning.

Fourth Avenue will host the annual Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair this weekend beginning Friday, December 13, 2019, open daily through Sunday, December 15, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Attendance for the Street Fair is estimated to be approximately 600,000 people, so please adjust travel plans accordingly.

The City of Tucson Transportation Department is planning two bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement projects. The Third Street and Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevard projects will use neighborhood streets to expand the low-stress biking network citywide by creating north/south and east/west routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks.

Eight applicants are currently being interviewed to fill one vacant City Magistrate position in City Court. The City of Tucson Magistrates Merit Selection Commission is asking for public comment from those who are familiar with the applicants or have had direct experience with them.
All comments are confidential and disclosed to Commission members only. Public comments should include the basis for expressed opinions.

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department is hosting Cookies with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 21, 8-10 a.m., at Udall Center, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road. The cost is $5 per person. Children will enjoy breakfast, an art project, and a story and picture with Santa.

The City of Tucson is seeking an artist, artists, or an artist team to create public art in connection with enhancements on Roger Road from Oracle Road to Romero Road.
The budget for the project is $31,520 and the new deadline is Friday, Dec. 13. Submissions are accepted online only. Artists previously experienced working with roadway design teams are of particular interest.

As my staff and I were getting last week’s update ready to post, I heard the news of the death of Judith Blair. I was able to get a sentence or two up, but her work in our community deserves a lot more than that.
Judith was a Tucson transplant (a word I choose with good reason), coming here when her son Joseph played basketball for the Wildcats. She grew to love our community and stayed after Joseph became a professional player.

Downtown Links Constructors (DLC), under contract with the City of Tucson Transportation Department, continue pre-construction field activities which are scheduled to continue through the end of December 2019. The traveling public will see equipment, work crews and short-term traffic control during this investigative phase of work which includes; surface, subsurface, geotechnical, environmental and survey verifications. Safely dispose of paints, chemicals, oils, pesticides, and certain other items that are sitting unused in your shed or garage. The City of Tucson Eastside Service Center, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd., is open Saturday, Dec. 7, 8 a.m.-noon, for household hazardous waste (HHW) collection.
Drop-off is free for city residents. Please do not bring medical waste, dried paint, ammunition, explosives, or CRT monitors. Vehicles should enter north from Prudence Road.

On Monday, Dec. 9, contractors with the City of Tucson Transportation Department will repave First Avenue north and south of Roger Road. Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this one-day project, one travel lane will be maintained in each direction on First Avenue, with periodic left-turn restrictions for northbound motorists turning west onto Roger Road.
There are no travel lane restrictions on Roger Road. Travelers are asked to obey all traffic control signs and watch for work crews.
