On May 16, 2017, City of Tucson voters overwhelmingly approved a new, five-year, half-cent sales tax to fund road repairs and public safety capital needs. The tax went into effect on July 1, 2017.
On Monday, January 6, 2020, Sunland Asphalt, under contract with the City of Tucson Transportation Department, will begin work to mill (remove asphalt) and repave a section of First Avenue north and south of Roger Road, and a section of First Avenue north and south of Prince Road.
During this two-day project, crews will work from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. One travel lane will be maintained in each direction on First Avenue, with periodic left-turn restrictions for northbound motorists turning west onto Roger Road. There are no travel lane restrictions on Roger Road.
Beginning Monday, January 6, 2020, Pace Electrical, under contract with the City of Tucson Transportation Department, will begin work to install a HAWK pedestrian crossing signal at the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Richey Avenue.
During the work, two lanes of travel will be maintained in each direction on Speedway Boulevard. There will be no travel impacts to Richey Avenue.
I’ve been beating the drum, or maybe the cistern, for water harvesting for my entire time on the council. Many of you know that the landscaping at my office is fed by a water harvesting system and I’ve always been looking at ways to encourage water harvesting in new developments around town.
Tucson Parks and Recreation dedicated a garden just outside of their office this month that will also utilize water harvesting. The garden, called the Sonoran Desert Rain Garden, will serve as a memorial space for employees and their families.
The University of Arizona New Year’s Eve Downtown Bowl Bash will take place in Downtown Tucson on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Sun Link streetcar will offer free rides from 8 a.m. New Year’s Eve until 2 a.m. New Year’s Day sponsored by the Center for Neurosciences. The Ward 5 Council Office, will be closed Wednesday, December 25 (Christmas Day) and Thursday, December 26. The Ward 5 office will reopen on Friday, December 27.
Our department's recent reorganization has allowed us, the Data Analytics team, to expand our section's purview from just spatial analysis and spatial data management to include the analysis and storage of all of the City's variable data and data types. As part of this bold mission, the Data Analytics section now manages a "data warehouse," a massive database to store all (or nearly all) of the City's data from many departments in one place.

The City of Tucson will observe the Christmas holiday on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and the New Year's holiday on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Except for emergency services, all City offices will be closed both days.
Residential and commercial trash and recycling will not be collected on either Wednesday, and customers with Wednesday-Friday collections will have their service delayed by one day. The Los Reales Landfill will be closed on both holidays.
The City of Tucson’s annual TreeCycle program begins Thursday, Dec. 26, and continues through Sunday, Jan. 12. Eight sites will be open for collection.
Residents are asked to remove all lights, ornaments, decorations, plastic tree bags, and tree stands before dropping off real trees at a TreeCycle site. In addition, do not leave trees outside the collection time or area due to fire hazard.
The Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl takes place in Tucson on New Year's Eve, as the Wyoming Cowboys from the Mountain West Conference take on the Georgia State Panthers from the Sun Belt Conference. A tailgate party begins at 10 a.m. Pregame activities start at 2 p.m., and kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
